A convicted killer raised his eyebrows and pursed his lips Wednesday when an Orange County jury announced that he should receive the death penalty for gunning down the manager of a Tustin Home Depot during a botched robbery in 2007.

A jury of six men and six women deliberated for five hours before deciding that death was the appropriate penalty for Jason Russell Richardson, 40, convicted last year of first-degree murder plus special circumstances for the shooting death of Tom Egan, who was trying to protect his employees when he was shot in the stomach Feb. 9, 2007.

"He will become the 60th convicted murderer from Orange County on Death Row among more than 700 inmates statewide awaiting execution, according to the California Department of Corrections website."

Let's have a catch up week....10 executions per day.

I’d prefer he get the Terminal I.V., but spending the rest of his life in a 6 x 10 foot cinderblock box isn’t any bed of roses either.

I shop at this Home Depot a lot. I think there still is a memorial to the victim.

Come on - lets be honest - how many of these vermin have been executed in California in the last 20 years or so?

California has some of the most violent prisons, and violent people in the country, where on going wars continue between Mexican gangs, black gangs, outlaw biker groups etc. The most violent of the violent.

It's my guess being humanely executed would be the easy way out, as opposed to living in these types of institutions for life. Facing life in these violent madhouses, I'd rather be executed if given a choice.

By the way, I favor the death penalty, in many cases.

The death row inmates are kept in separate prisons for the most part. I think if we can kill them maybe we could convince the nuts in government that it would be for the prisoners own good if they were put on a vegan diet and forced to do yoga every day for the rest of their lives in their 4x6 cells.

Well he should raise his eyebrows at that sentence! Cut a little slack, and show some mercy. It IS a first offense--he never killed anyone before.

And he was always kind to his mother, even when she abused him by refusing to buy him puppys and kitties to torture as a child.

And he was in the process of turning his life around, when the damned Republicans in Sacremento forced a tuition increase that left him no alternative except robbing to get the extra money needed to continue his night school classes in locksmithing...

Exterminate them like cockroaches. Clear out all the guards and then accidentally release some Zyklon B. That would save the taxpayers a whole lot of money, even though the ACLU might get upset.

I would agree as well that spending life in a cinderblock box ain’t no bed of roses for him, but only if they pipe in Hillarys infamous “I am sick and tired” speech 24/7. Let him writhe on the ground like James T. Kirk hearing a painful alien sound.

I think by that measure, Connecticut is ahead of California.

Let me get this straight. Richardson murders Egan in Feb 2007 and Richardson just got convicted last year? 3 years to try and convict?

What's really wrong with this picture?

On the other side of the courtroom, defense attorneys George Peters and Richard Schwartzberg were somber.

"I've been doing this (defending in death penalty cases) for 27 years, and his upbringing was the worst I have ever seen." Peters said.

He argued to the jury that Richardson was the product of brutal childhood. He was raised by an alcoholic grandmother and a drug-addicted mother who gravitated toward violent men. Richardson's mother also became involved with the Hell's Angels when he was a child.

Hey, I'm depraved on account I'm deprived.

Richardson killed Egan when he was thirty-seven years old. At some point, you just gotta get over you upbringing.
