New Technologies Redraw the World’s Energy Picture
NY Times ^ | October 25, 2011 | CLIFFORD KRAUSS

GOLDA MEIR, the former prime minister of Israel, used to tell a joke about how Moses must have made a wrong turn in the desert: “He dragged us 40 years through the desert to bring us to the one place in the Middle East where there was no oil.’ ”

As it turns out, Moses may have had it right all along. In the last couple of years, vast amounts of natural gas have been found deep under Israel’s Mediterranean waters, and studies have begun to test the feasibility of extracting synthetic oil from a large kerogen-rich rock field southwest of Jerusalem.

Israel’s swing of fate is just one of many big energy surprises developing as a new generation of unconventional fossil fuels take hold. From the high Arctic waters north of Norway to a shale field in Argentine Patagonia, from the oil sands of western Canada to deepwater oil prospects off the shores of Angola, giant new oil and gas fields are being mined, steamed and drilled with new technologies. Some of the reserves have been known to exist for decades but were inaccessible either economically or technologically.

Put together, these fuels should bring hundreds of billions of barrels of recoverable reserves to market in coming decades and shift geopolitical and economic calculations around the world. The new drilling boom is expected to diversify global sources away from the Middle East, just as the growth in consumption of fuels shifts from the United States and Europe to China, India and the rest of the developing world.

“Use whatever hackneyed phrase you want, like tectonic shift or game-changer,” said Edward L. Morse, global head of commodity research at Citigroup. “These sources will dramatically change the energy supply outlook, and there is little debate about that.”

This striking shift in energy...

Mostly positive article about the future of these technologies and the success in reducing our dependency on the M.E supply

No doubt the author had a bit of lock jaw as he penned this.

Government, central planning, collectivism, Marxism - whatever term you use - must create shortages and rationing to keep its power.

Contrast this with capitalism, which tends to alleviate shortages.

Yup, it’s all about control through dependency.

Very comprehensive article and fair. That’s the way to write lay out the facts with pros and cons and let the reader come to their own conclusion.

Given the events in the middle east and the potential rise of multiple, unfriendly governments, it is the IDEAL time to tap our own energy.

This will disrupt the funding of the islamists and slow the rise of a new caliphate.

If you have time, check Google for drilling maps in the Bakken of North Dakota, the Niobrara of the eastern Rockies, and the Eagleford and Barnett regions of Texas. You will be amazed at what you find. Experts are talking petroleum self-sufficiency in a decade, and with the oil from tar sands in Canada the capital of the oil world will shift from the Middle East.

30 zillion barrells of oil you say? Pshaw....Just wait til the liberals find a water fowl whose feelings get hurt...

The liberals life is built upon finding ways to tie our own hands behind our backs. The topic doesn’t matter - anything from ridiculous rules of engagement on the battlefield to not being able to drill due to a moose or bird being in the area. They live to make progress difficult.

I live in the heart of the Marcellus Shale play. I recently attended a business rountable with T Boone Pickens and Gov Tom Corbett (of Pennsylvania) to discuss the future.

All these new "finds" are due to improvements in technology to extract the energy. it is exciting and incredible for our nation.

Just remember, environmentalists and liberals loved Natural Gas as a "clean energy" for decades. It was not until we found vast supplies under our feet that these hypocrites changed their mind and opposed its extraction.

It goes to show where their priorities lie.

I hear we will reach peak oil by 1880, and be completely reliant on candles by 1897. Once we run out of whales, we’re doomed, I tell you, doomed!/Victorian

For a moment there, I thought this article would mention Rossi’s E-Cat technology.

Oh well....

There are many energy sources that man has yet to tap, much less fully understand.

It seems that arrogance and greed gets in the way of societal progress more often than not.
