Who is Jerry Sandusky?
Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | 11/06/2011 | Bill Lyon

So what manner of a man is this Jerry Sandusky?

On Nov. 13, 1999, he received a standing ovation from a crowd of 96,480. It was the occasion of his official retirement as dean of Linebacker U's impenetrable defense. For a long, long time, he was thought to be the successor to Joe Paterno. When he finally decided to leave the fold, after 32 years of unswerving loyalty and uncommon patience, --snip-- It has been over 10 years since Sandusky left Penn State to devote all of his time to the Second Mile, a charitable organization he and his wife started in 1977 as a sanctuary, a safe house, for children at risk.

It is a noble undertaking, and it has grown and grown, and it is estimated that it reaches 100,000 kids a year. The name comes from the Sermon on the Mount - "And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile."

Paterno knew of only the one allegation, and he says the assistant coach who reported seeing the inappropriate behavior did not get into any specifics.

He knew about the 1998 'incident' also.

And, the then grad-assistent said he told JP about the rape.

The coverup stands out loud and clear. Penn State’s President Graham Spanier issued a statement of support for the two administrators accused of perjury and failure to report the sexual abuse of a child. He said he believes in their “innocence.” My a**.

He said that PSU will pick up the tab for defense fees! Of course. He knew of the 'incident' and expects PSU to pick up HIS legal fees, also.

In the fall of 2000, according to prosecutors, a janitor found Sandusky in the showers of the football building performing oral sex on a young boy pinned against a wall. The janitor, distraught, told a fellow employee that he had seen people killed in the Korean War, but that he had just see something he would never forget. The employee thought the janitor was at risk of a heart attack. In the end, no report was made, not by the janitor or the fellow employee he had told, both of whom, according to prosecutors, worried about their job security. And not by the janitor’s supervisor, who also had been informed. Begs the question, why did they worry about their jobs?

For the same reason the grad-assistant (now assistant coach) did not immediately call 911.

My guess is that Joe will get one or two more years, tops,

Listening to several PA radio and television sports analysts indicates to me that he may not make it to the end of the season.

“Joe Paterno knew of Sandusky’s tendencies YEARS before the 2002 event and years after the 2002 event but kept silent in the coverup.”

What are you a mindreader? How can you say what Paterno knew, or was thinking? He IMMEDIATELY reported what the GA saw.

You come off as a schmuck trying to pin responsibility for this on Paterno.

There is a police report on the 1998 'incident'. JP was Sandusky's boss.

He IMMEDIATELY reported what the GA saw.

No. He waited till the next day to tell the AD. According to the grad-assistant Joe was told the boy was raped. According to Joe he told the AD there was some horseplay.

You come off as a schmuck trying to pin responsibility for this on Paterno.

Whatever. Joe knew that it was being covered up to prevent a scandal and that Sandusky was free to rape again and again. If Joe had made this public he would have saved countless little boys from being raped. Part of it is on Joe.

I am more concerned about what the AD knew.

If you are concerned about JP, then you should be concerned about what he knew and why he kept silent in the coverup of a rape in his locker room ...

What riles me, is after the’09,99 and 02 incidents, no one limited Sandusky’s access to the complex.

That bespeaks a cover up to prevent a scandal.

I don't think they had the power to 'arbitrarily' limit his access. They had covered up his previous incidents and Sandusky felt they would have to cover-up for him in the future.

Please consider the leftist, liberal, pro-homosexual, environment of Penn State. Make an accusation like this, and your wrong, you lose your job and get sued.

Paterno is 84. Brought up in a time when this type of thing was never spoken of. You make a big deal out of him waiting a day to go to the AD. What time of day was it reported to him? In the AM, or the PM? What did he do in the time he waited? If you know, please share it with me I haven’t seen it reported in detail.

What EXACTLY did the GA tell Paterno? What EXACTLY did Paterno tell the AD? If you have a source for what actually was said. Tell me where it is. Don’t give me what was “reported”.

You say Joe Paterno knew little boys were being raped and did nothing about it. When was Paterno arrested? Failure to report these rapes is a crime. Did the Grand Jury indict him? Where was he arrested? Did he post bail? You say Paterno KNEW it was being covered up. Tell me how you know what people are thinking.

I will allow that Joe Paterno could have handled this better. My problem is that you come off like you know all the facts and what everyone knew, or was thinking. Could you be wrong? You are calling Paterno guilty. How can you do that?

Sandusky will commit suicide.

The sooner, the better.

You're an idiot if you think Paterno should have publicly accused somebody of being a homosexual pedophile predator without personally witnessing it himself. Paterno did the right thing and reported the incident up his chain of command. He was a 75-year-old football coach back in 2002, not a district attorney or a police investigator.

Get a grip.

The the grand jury transcripts. It clealy states that the GA witnessed the young boy being ANALLY raped.. There's NO equivocation, and thew GA stated that he reported that exactly to his father over the phoine, and the next day, to Paterno.

As I've said before, that guy's behavior upsets me. I don't get it. He saw the most vile act beign done to an innocent child. He should have gone intot he shower, pulled the kid away, and beaten Sandusky's head to a pulp against the tile walls..

Get a grip. Joe participated in at least two coverups. Why didn't he advise the grad-student (who worked for him) to go to the police? No. He took it up the chain and saw that it was hushed up. Can't have the public know that we have child-rapists on our staff raping ten year olds in our locker room ....

I didn't make a big deal of it. I just made a simple correction the post that said he "immediately" reported it. Have a problem with that?

Poor Joe. Not his problem if one of his buddies is banging ten year olds in his locker room.

You make it sound like JP was a feeble old dude with no influence at PSU. He was an ICON and the fact that he allowed this to be covered up totally crushes his image.

This sounds like the Archdiocese of Boston with Bernard Law in charge all over again.

This predator probably has been doing this for decades.

Paterno knew of nothing else regarding Sandusky's behavior except for that one allegation.

What about the 1998 investigation for which there is a written police report?
