In an anonymous industrial park in Virginia, in an unassuming brick building, the CIA is following up to five million tweets a day.
At the agency's Open Source Center in McLean, a team known affectionately as the 'vengeful librarians' also pores over Facebook, newspapers, TV news channels, local radio stations, Internet chat rooms anything overseas that anyone can access and contribute to openly.
From Arabic to Mandarin Chinese, from an angry tweet to a thoughtful blog, the analysts gather the information, often in native tongue. Keeping track: The CIA team follow up to five million tweets a day around the world to gauge what is going on in different regions

I’d like to say hi to the CIA librarians reading this...
-And they are watching every moment of it. :)
Well there is encryption. Make them work an additional 30 minutes to get your message.
If Zero is reading this... up yours Bozo! Commie’s suck. Come and get me!
Of jeez. It’s called “intelligence gathering.” The CIA used to do the same thing back in the day when the media consisted of newspapers, magazines, movies, and books. I would hope to hell that our intelligence agencies are looking at publically produced material all day long... the only question I have is how they can find the time. But to see some sinister gathering of spies looking at tweets and Facebook is a reach.
Hello “Vengeful Librarians”! - Guess which finger I am holding up?
Ditto. FUBO, you worthless un-American and anti-American socialist. Remember, there are millions of us that have sworn an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic... You are an enemy, and you will be removed 1/20/13.
I wouldn’t put it past Homeland Security to have a computer program which scans the vast volume of tweets, blogs and postings looking for some phrases or word combinations considered worrisome and idenifying the posters. Once identified, a simple file is maintained automatically until a defined critical mass or set of “magic words” raises a red flag for human examination. It just seems logical.
Thanks for your support :)
You an oath keeper?
Seems to me that ALL Americans who have said the Pledge of Alligance are oath keepers.
Time to stand up is coming soon.
Thirty years ago, when I worked as a CTI (crypto-linguist) for the Navy Security Group, thses kinds of activities by the CIA would have been prosecuted as then it was illegal to spy on U.S. citizens domestically and internationally.
Ronald Reagan was President.
