In an anonymous industrial park in Virginia, in an unassuming brick building, the CIA is following up to five million tweets a day.

At the agency's Open Source Center in McLean, a team known affectionately as the 'vengeful librarians' also pores over Facebook, newspapers, TV news channels, local radio stations, Internet chat rooms – anything overseas that anyone can access and contribute to openly.

From Arabic to Mandarin Chinese, from an angry tweet to a thoughtful blog, the analysts gather the information, often in native tongue. Keeping track: The CIA team follow up to five million tweets a day around the world to gauge what is going on in different regions

Of jeez. It’s called “intelligence gathering.” The CIA used to do the same thing back in the day when the media consisted of newspapers, magazines, movies, and books. I would hope to hell that our intelligence agencies are looking at publically produced material all day long... the only question I have is how they can find the time. But to see some sinister gathering of spies looking at tweets and Facebook is a reach.

Hey 'vengeful librarian', tell Obama to read Reinstitute the House Committee on Un-American Activities. I'm hoping he'll have to testify some day. Oh, and after he reads that, show him Amnesty: The Line in the Sand. After that, show him all my posts and posts of all FReepers and make sure we're on the bad boy/girl lists. . We can't wait for a visit. . .

I wouldn’t put it past Homeland Security to have a computer program which scans the vast volume of tweets, blogs and postings looking for some phrases or word combinations considered worrisome and idenifying the posters. Once identified, a simple file is maintained automatically until a defined critical mass or set of “magic words” raises a red flag for human examination. It just seems logical.

Hummmm

You an oath keeper?

Seems to me that ALL Americans who have said the Pledge of Alligance are oath keepers.

Time to stand up is coming soon.

Thirty years ago, when I worked as a CTI (crypto-linguist) for the Navy Security Group, thses kinds of activities by the CIA would have been prosecuted as then it was illegal to spy on U.S. citizens domestically and internationally.

Ronald Reagan was President.
