Penn State board of trustees 'got it wrong,' says attorney advising Jerry Sandusky's alleged victims

A Harrisburg civil attorney who has been advising some of the alleged victims of former Penn State defensive coach Jerry Sandusky released a statement today about the board of trustees action last night firing coach Joe Paterno.

"The board of trustees got it wrong. They should have consulted the victims before making a decision on Mr. Paterno," Ben Andreozzi said. "They should have considered these victims watch TV and are aware of the students' reaction and may not want to be associated with the downfall of Mr. Paterno. The school instead elected to do what it felt was in its own best interest at the time. Isn’t that what put the school in this position in the first place?"

Andreozzi is working with Let Go Let Peace Come In, an organization providing services to child sex abuse victims, which is offering free counseling to the alleged victims. "The way the Board reached its decision raises more concerns than the decision itself. There is no indication the Board considered the impact of the decision on the abuse victims," Andreozzi continued. "The school let the victims down once, and I think they owed it to the victims to at least gauge how the immediate termination decision would impact them as opposed to Mr. Paterno's resignation at the end of the year. These victims do not live in a bubble.

"They see the students reaction to the termination, and to think this does not weigh on their minds would be naive."

I don’t think it says anything about Penn State. If anyone is to be attacked, it would be Sandusky. The victims have the overwhelming support of everyone here.

But I do understand their concern. It only takes one nut for something to happen.

My son is class of ‘09. He is crushed. My husband and I are devastated. I thought we researched the school thoroughly and had no idea the culture had become so gay oriented. What happened to those boys just gives you a sick feeling in the pit of your stomach.

There’s no reason at all to consult the victims. JoePa got fired for allowing a bad situation to fester within the school. The specifics of the bad situation (including the victims) is immaterial from the SCHOOL’S perspective, what matter for them is their name is being dragged through the mud because of a guy he employed and kept employing after finding out very bad things could be happening. It’s not the victims decision, it’s the school’s decision.

Tom Bradley is the interim head coach. It is believed that when the season is over a new head coach will be hired and will be asked to totally replace the coaching staff.

Prior to this incident, Urban Meyer was reported to be in talks with PSU about becoming Head Coach. A lot of boosters had previously come to the conclusion that it was time for Paterno to step down. This was because PSU had not been in the elite bowl games at the end of the seasons in recent years [not because of this incident]. Although, both Meyer and PSU had previously denied this ...

BTW: It has been previously reported [before this incident] that Meyer and his wife have recently purchased property in the area ...

How do you know that the NCAA isn’t in on this up to its eyeballs?

How does an assistant like Sandusky NOT get a bazillion job offers after helping architect two national titles at PSU?

The guy was cast off the island for a decade in college football. What’s a little sicker is that he VOLUNTEERED to be a high school coach. Was he recruiting? If he was, for whom?

Where was the NCAA on this guy given he just disappeared. After watching Ohio State go scot free, what makes you think anything at all will happen here?

How far does all this go?

You ask some dang good questions.

“This is close to tin foil hat territory.”

MOST of the ranting posts on this subject for the EXECUTION of Joe Paterno fall in that territory.

NAMBLA needs to get in front of this right quick. What about Sandusky’s rights? He had no choice. He was born this way.

If you need a sarc tag, you don’t grasp the scope of the opportunity this provides those sick freaks.

Sandusky couldn’t leave the boys behind.

Most colleges taunt their “diversity”. My daughter has been looking at colleges this year and at some schools, it is obvious that being a gay friendly school is more important than academics. Sad, but true. Political correctness is destroying America.

The victims were ignored for decades and the attitude of PennStatePedo seems to be that everything would have been better if everyone had continued to ignore them.

I think the lawyers concerns are quite valid. Seeing the rampant nuttery of PennStatPedo football fans - I think the victims are right to fear being further victimized by the so called community.

Says more about the warped priorities of Penn Staters then it does about the Board.

Well.....it’s an attorney. Take it with a grain of salt.

But, on the other hand, it’s a valid point of view. The accusers are probably pretty freaked about the reaction.

This is why I am puzzled - the circumstances of this incident is NOT the Paterno I knew ...

I was there too ... Atherton Hall ... I had friends over in "the barracks" ... and I had the same experience with Paterno a few times on campus.

I will hold my judgment until this maniacal media frenzy is over. The frothing at the mouth on FR is more than I can stand. Sandusky should be strung up. Announce to the inmate population that he raped little boys ... he will get whats coming to him.

But if Paterno is found to have knowingly covered up for the guilty ... he should get the neighboring cell ... and that is a hard thing for this PSU alumn to wish upon JoePa.

I don’t know why the coverup should be so surprising to anyone.

Because that was not who Paterno was - he would bench players for misconduct, even if it meant losing the next game. Even for Freshmen missing mandatory study/tutoring hall. Paterno instituted that becuase he felt that new players had to develop good study habits. Also, if they missed practice or team meetings without authorization.

Also no Athletic dorms - he always said that they were Student Athletes, with the emphasis on Student. He made players live in the dorms with regular students because he wanted them to enjoy the full college experience.

He even refused to call the strong safety position on defense the "Monster Back" - he felt it was demeaning to the player and the game. At PSU that position is called the "Hero Back" ...

How would the victims have felt to see Paterno carried off the field on his players’ shoulders this weekend, or to see him given a 100,000-person standing ovation?

Given the way the students treated the TV Van, it's entirely likely that there would have been violence in the stands or outside in the stadium parking lot. The community is deeply divided over Paterno's actions and his student loyalists have shown a tendency to get physical. One banner critical of Paterno, anywhere, and the lid blows off. The university's actions have eliminated that possibility.

It’s only a valid point of view if they’ve been Stockholm Syndromed into believing they gave up their innocence for “the good of the team”.

I’m beginning to think Happy Valley is The Village of the Damned.

The people who ignored the victims are gone (except McQueary and Curley), and they have no support from the community.

I have not heard a single Penn State fan going after the victims or say anything negative about them.
