The tar sandhills near Mills in north central Nebraska, through which the Keystone XL pipeline is planned to be built.
The woman seated before the row of suited state legislators in her red Husker team hoodie was choking on tears. She had grown up on a farm in Nebraska. Her parents had grown up on farms, in the days before electricity and running water, and now she said generations of toil and sweat could be destroyed in an instant by a $7bn pipeline project.
A leak from the pipeline, which would run from the tar sands of Alberta to the refineries of Texas, could poison her land forever, Donna Roller told the hearing this week during a special session of the state legislature.
"This thing shouldn't even be built. It's wrong and it's toxic," she said. Then she went outside and collapsed against a wall, sobbing. "Somebody, something has got to stop it," she said.
On Thursday, something did. The State Department said it would review alternative routes for the pipeline to avoid ecologically sensitive areas of Nebraska.
The announcement was an unexpected victory for environmental groups and for landowners like Roller who had despaired of forcing Barack Obama to take a tough stand against the oil industry going into an election year.

... and a completely expected loss to the thousands of landowners and consumers and jobless Americans who could have benefited from lower energy costs and more jobs.
But hey, at least it shut up the poor boo-hoo lady, and that's all that matters.
Forest fires EVERY year wipe out 100's of thousands of acres due to over-growth, but we have to "protect" the pristine woods, so loggers don't thin them out and create lumber or goods.....we've got so much land now that's Government-owned and controlled, to keep the Oil Barons happy and the Chinese happy, that Americans are left out of jobs and energy.
Somebody show the dopes a pipeline map of the USA. LOL .... This pipeline will be newer than the other two and it’ll be the shortest one in Nebraska.

I am a landowner in South Dakota, just north of the Nebraska Sand Hills. The pipeline may end up running across my land. I have received two requests for permission to survey a route through my property. I have refused both times and will continue to fight to keep the pipeline off my land.
The pipeline may be a good deal for America, but it is a rotten deal for the landowners whose land will be devalued by the constant and long-lasting risk of the pipeline. The landowners will receive a small, one-time payment but will have their land put at risk for as long as the pipeline exists. From a purely financial standpoint, it is a high risk, low reward deal. It just plain stinks.
My family already lost land when the dams were build along the Missouri River. We did our part for U.S. energy policy. It is someone else’s turn.
You don’t have to be a liberal to oppose the pipeline.
NIMBYs are trash—all of ‘em. It’s good that they’ll be losing their pensions (default) and croaking from their sedentary ways over the next decade or two. Good riddance! There are no “property values.” They’re finished. An age of property rights without NIMBY garbage getting in the way is about to begin. ...same with their socialist sources of income.
Irving has a large refinery in Saint John NB, the could simply pipe it east, refine it and ship it out of that port... keep all the jobs for themselves.

Exactly.
The risks to you and other land owners are very high. This isn’t going through federal land, and and clean up costs will be very high when (not if) the line leaks.
Not to mention the fact that the government has hinted they will use ED to take the line if they can’t buy rights to it.
