Booing the Character Issue - We should care if the accusations against Cain are true.
National Review ^ | 11/11/2011 | Mona Charen

I think I understand why the audience at Wednesday’s CNBC debate booed Maria Bartiromo’s question to Herman Cain about sexual-harassment allegations. They don’t believe there is any truth to them. They suspect, along with the candidate, that the women concerned are part of a liberal lynch mob out to smear another strong, conservative, black man. They know that accusations of sexual harassment are often nebulous and PC. If I guess correctly, they also believe — with considerable justification — that the press is less interested in the dry details of policy than in salacious tales of misbehavior. They resent being dragged into another smutty distraction.

Yes, but. As someone who was well-disposed toward Herman Cain as a public figure (if not as a potential president), I cannot help recalling the response of Democrats to revelations about Bill Clinton. “We know all about it,” one exasperated reader wrote to Newsweek magazine, “and WE DON’T CARE.” In fact, the majority of Americans did not care — and it was not our finest moment as a nation. Liberals, who professed to be appalled by the one accusation against Clarence Thomas (just one non-contemporaneous accusation — not four or five), dismissed Bill Clinton’s behavior as no big deal. Stuart Taylor noted at the time that even if everything Anita Hill said about Clarence Thomas were true, it would not be nearly as serious as the allegations against Bill Clinton. Conservatives argued at the time that character mattered. Liberals replied, in effect, that it didn’t...

The fact the assertions about Cain haven’t resonated with the public is driving his detractors to the wall. We’re going to see a lot more of this in the time to come. And I agree, respond with facts and logic. But that doesn’t mean we have to put up with abuse. In my years here, I can only recall one other time I’ve ever hit the abuse button. Can’t recall completely the story behind it, only that a FReeper was criticizing my military background (he had more time in the military than I), and became quite abusive. He’s no longer around...

Oh... and I make no bones about my doubts about Cain and his readiness for prime time. I’ve had those doubts way before this episode. Nothing that has occurred with this episode and the handling of it has helped assuages any doubts that I might have about Cain and his campaign.

Done, thanks again for the kind words.

I don’t have the ability to post a comment to the article directly, but I e-mailed Mona with the post.

“I cannot help but thinking Mona should remember that accusations are not proof of anything...”

Yes, remember the Duke Lacrosse fiasco.

"You are disgusting. "

"You are a hateful person..."

You hit the abuse button because I said there's been some pretty fascist talk on these threads. And yet you call me names with impunity, and that's ok. Swell set of ethics you have.

Ok, here's what it looks like is going on. You folks have someone you support, namely Herman Cain, that some of us do not support. The Cain supporters seem determined to beat the rest of us into submission, and failing that, running to mods to get us banned. That is the very definition of "fascist," you cannot deny that.

Sad but true. I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like this here before. And the fact that people are so touchy about using the word "fascist" to describe fascist behavior tells me a lot. Maybe it struck a chord, but I suspect only in fascist hearts.

Datapoint: David Axelrod lives in Bielik's building in CHICAGO.

Old history. She now lives in Mundelein, IL with her 'fiance' and her son.

Yep. I was completely wrong about him, too, ‘cause I didn't like his politics or nationality.
I STILL wonder who orchestrated his downfall. It wasn't an accident. A lot of money and/or favors changed hands somewhere.

>>Cain hired a very good defamation lawyer. Haven’t heard much from the bimbos since...<<

Granted, that’s the adult response. But my way would have been a lot more fun...*s*...not a politically astute move, of course.

I was thinking about the black man preying on the white woman angle as well. Rather transparent IMO.

Romney stays strong while Cain and Perry falter. But on the center top his headline screams with a picture that Cain is still on top!

Rasmussen today....

Romney, Newt, then Cain.

The Powers That Be have repudiated us for our disobedience. They've corrected the problem.

Fascist "you will think as I do or else get banned" talk notwithstanding.

This line was addressed to me. The fact you qualified the name "Fascist" with my quote makes your term fascist directed to me and no one else.

For that I have a right to call you disgusting and hateful. You made the statement; you own it. And I stand by what I've said about you.

Ok, here's what it looks like is going on.

I don't give a damn what you think is going on. You've lost all credibility to talk to me. Your ideas are proven baseless. Further contact will be met with silence. You have noting to offer this discussion.

Now you're the "victim"?
Interesting.

I'm not going over the top in defense of Cain. The people accusing him have an established track record of false accusations. Why is that not enough for you to dismiss their accusations?

I frankly don’t care whether she does or doesn’t support Cain. I don’t care that others support Perry, or Bachmann, or Gingrich, or Paul, or... That’s their choice. My choice is Cain. As I posted to sklar in post #40, and before he got the ZOT, this forum is not monolithic.

What I do care about is making accusations against Cain based on faulty or unproven assumptions. If we did that with their candidate they’d be livid, and rightly so. But now we’re the guilty ones, the assaulter, because we stand up for our candidate. What convoluted logic that is; but typical of what I’ve read here today. As you pointed out...Alansky rules.

“Most Republicans have reached the point of stupification when it comes to Herman Cain.”

- Wrong.

“Herman Cain LIED about kknowing about the payoff right out of the box.”

- Prove it by laying out for all of us “stupid” people the questions asked and answers given. Cite links, sources and specifics.

Since you made accusation, I am sure you will be able to back it up. Thank you!

I am entitled to an opinion. Mine is a level of discomfort with conservatives sounding just like Lanny Davis during the Lewinsky scandal, when they make remarks about the women who are doing the accusing.

I think it demeans us. We are better than that.

As a conservative, I will NOT ignore the claims against Cain - if they at some point begin to carry any weight. As of right, given their sources, the carry no weight with me.

With that said, you also stated: “and in this case, I’m referring to the lying, which Cain clearly engaged in at the start -”

Please PROVE this accusation of yours. List the questions asked of Cain, the answers given, and cite sources, links and specifics.

I am sure you will be able to do this since you made the allegation.

Indeed, when Gloria All Red is the representative,
you know the accusation is intended only to advance communism.
