Crime and Courts: Want to keep guns out of your home? Buy a 'no-gun' sign from the city

Now that Wisconsin allows people to carry concealed guns, here's one thing you might want to know: That includes your home. That means that everyone from the Mary Kay lady to the plumber can come into your home packing heat, unless you tell them they can't, or unless you post a sign.

The law, which allows people to apply for licenses to carry concealed guns, knives, Tasers and billy clubs, went into effect on Nov. 1.

People who oppose the law -- according to some polls they make up the majority of the state -- might be put off at having to stick a sign on their door to keep guns out of the home. But I think it beats having to tell everyone who comes to the door that they need to put their gun in the car.

So I'm going to buy a sign, which are being sold at the Madison City Clerk's office in Room 103 of the City-County Building at 210 Martin Luther King Blvd., from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The sign, a 5-inch-by-7-inch vinyl sticker, costs $5.

Michigan is gun only and it drives me nuts. We might get tasers very soon but I still wouldn’t mind carrying a decent sized pocket knife or a baton.

You're fine on folders: http://michigan.gov/msp/0,1607,7-123-1586_27094-10953--,00.html

"5. Is it illegal to have a knife with a blade over 3 inches in my possession? MCL 750.226 No. Michigan law specifies that a person, with intent to use the knife unlawfully against another, shall not go armed with a knife having a blade over 3 inches in length. "

I suspect that even an idiot lib will think twice before actually posting these public invitations to home invaders.

You would think so wouldn't you? But...

"I would say we're probably selling at least five to 10 a day," says Elena Berg in the City Clerk's office. "Mainly businesses, but some are going on homes as well."

Some people might want to post a bit different sign...

Does this give the home owner the right to frisk anyone who comes on their property?

I’m more concerned about cell phones because of their tracking. I find it to be an invasion of privacy. I have considered putting up a “No cell phones” sign but if visitors leave it in their car, in my driveway...oops!

"Michigan law specifies that a person, with intent to use the knife unlawfully against another, shall not go armed with a knife having a blade over 3 inches in length. "

So, if my intention is to use my knife lawfully on others there is no restriction on blade length? Excellent!

I suspect that someone who put such a sign on his house and was himself armed, should he shoot an intruder, would be adjudged guilty of murder because he had that sign that effectively notifies a home invader that it is safe to invade that home.

If I can't trust someone in my home armed, I can't trust them to be there at all !

There are many ways to make range marker, grasshopper.

No, it just says they can't bring their gun in, nothing about what you can have in your own home. Life ain't fair.

hehe. If I were a burglar or robber I would be excited to find a house with a "no guns" sticker on the window. I'd know I was home free even if I interrupted someone at home. They likely wouldn't be armed and couldn't hurt me, because I certainly will be armed. .

Gun grabbers should put their safety where their month is and post one of these.

Then they ought to commission a study as to the crime rate with residences with them.

Why should gun grabbers live under the protection of the criminal element not knowing who is armed and who is not?

The “No guns” sign will have the opposite effect, as it will let the criminals know which houses have no guns.

Or...could just be the home of a guy who needs some target practice and doesn't want to leave his recliner.
