I wouldn't go so far as to defend McQueary, who was the ONLY person who could have shut down Sandusky's alleged activities by calling police to report a felony IN PROGRESS, when the police could have intervened and provided multiple witnesses as well as an identifiable victim with whom to prosecute.

http://thatlawyerdude.blogspot.com/2011/11/strong-defense-of-joe-paterno-why.html?m=1 (an attorney) also says Paterno did the right thing and that, by "going further" as many suggest, could have exposed himself and/or Penn State to a libel suit had the allegation proven unfounded.

I would like to put up petition candidates to replace every single alumni trustee who voted to dismiss Paterno. The Trustees themselves admitted that they have not even begun to investigate the facts in the case which (along with their failure to fire Mike McQueary) demonstrates that their spoken or unspoken motive in firing Paterno was simply to gratify a media lynch mob, with ZERO regard for right or wrong or even the best interests of the University.

They were saying the football program under Joe was at fault.

Yeah, that's pretty much the size of it Mr. Harris.

I agree. People keep saying Paterno should have called the police; he didn’t witness the act; he’s not the one who should have reported the incident to the police.

He reported what was hearsay at the time to his superiors.

You are factually and ethically challenged on this issue. Retire from the thread before you make a bigger ass of yourself. :)

I thought they showed no courage, not to back someone who really needed it at the time.

I'd guess that kid who got raped by Sandusky would say much the same about McQueary and Paterno. Anyone who wants to defend either man should seriously consider if their view would be the same if that kid had been their son or grandson or little brother.

The Board needs to go. So do some of the Regents/state figures, including, apparently, some in state gov’t. This went on too long. People knew. From the janitor on up.

I joked about the janitor knowing and turns out, at least one guy did.

C’mon. If Penn State wants to have any money left, it needs to amputate above the gang greene and cauterize the wound.

Bull. You cannot be sued for libel for reporting evidence of a crime to polic, even if it is discovered no crime was committed.

McQueary is a filthy coward for not stopping the attack and rescuing the boy. Paterno and all the rest are filthy cowards for not reporting to the police what McQueary told them.

The whole lot of them can rot in hell for their cowardly coverup that led to the abuse of more young boys.

Disgusting!

Joe isn't just a coach at the college.

Joe is a board member for The Second Mile.

Joe was supposed to check any accusation of this kind of stuff out and immediately report it to law enforcement. He is required to by both Pennsylvania law and Federal Law.

Not just go to his bosses at the college.

Joe has helped put the college on the hook for millions. Every job in the world will fire you for that from the corner gas station to NASA.

Good bye Joe.

Harris also criticized state police commissioner Frank Noonan for saying Paterno had a "moral obligation" to contact police when told of the incident, according to the report.

"When I heard that, it blew my mind," Harris said. "Why would they bring the moral into the legal? Now, everyone gets to interpret in their own way. That's what really bothers me: Joe did what was right for him to do. He forwarded the information to his superiors. That's the legal procedure at Penn State.

"If I had to choose today between the moral integrity and character of Joe Paterno and the politicians and commentators criticizing him, I would pick Joe Paterno, hands-down, no contest every time."

If this is a fair sample of the feeling of Penn State fans, then they've turned Paterno and Penn State football into an idol. It's become their moral compass and master.

I agree.

Paterno might actually be the closest thing to a hero to come out of all this.

McQueary should have stopped the rape by force if necessary. Mc Queary and all the rest should have been at the nearest police station dragging the sorry Sandusky with them. They knew and they did nothing. If they want jobs that don’t require moral backbone, have them get a job with the Food Stamp President and his collection of riffraff and pond scum.

..... As I understand it, Paterno passed Mr McQueary’s report to the athletic director and a vice president of the college. I do not understand how Sandusky was permitted to have any association of any sort whatever with Penn State after that. The hairs on the back of my neck are telling me that this pedophilia scandal extends further than just Jerry Sandusky.

BTW, does anyone know what Mr Paterno’s obligations under the state a/o federal law would have been at the time (1999?) that the incident of which he was made aware actually occurred?

Paterno needed to go, he didn’t report the crime to the local police and didn’t follow up on the report that he had made.
