Franco Harris defends Paterno, McQueary, blasts trustees

Former Pittsburgh Steelers running back and Penn State alum Franco Harris blasted the school's Board of Trustees for its decision to fire Joe Paterno and defended Mike McQueary, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

"I feel that the board made a bad decision in letting Joe Paterno go," Harris told the Tribune-Review's Kevin Gorman. "I'm very disappointed in their decision. I thought they showed no courage, not to back someone who really needed it at the time. They were saying the football program under Joe was at fault.

"They really wouldn't give a reason. They're linking the football program to the scandal and, possibly, the cover-up. That's very disturbing to me.

I wouldn't go so far as to defend McQueary, who was the ONLY person who could have shut down Sandusky's alleged activities by calling police to report a felony IN PROGRESS, when the police could have intervened and provided multiple witnesses as well as an identifiable victim with whom to prosecute.

http://thatlawyerdude.blogspot.com/2011/11/strong-defense-of-joe-paterno-why.html?m=1 (an attorney) also says Paterno did the right thing and that, by "going further" as many suggest, could have exposed himself and/or Penn State to a libel suit had the allegation proven unfounded.

I would like to put up petition candidates to replace every single alumni trustee who voted to dismiss Paterno. The Trustees themselves admitted that they have not even begun to investigate the facts in the case which (along with their failure to fire Mike McQueary) demonstrates that their spoken or unspoken motive in firing Paterno was simply to gratify a media lynch mob, with ZERO regard for right or wrong or even the best interests of the University.

They were saying the football program under Joe was at fault.

Yeah, that's pretty much the size of it Mr. Harris.

I agree. People keep saying Paterno should have called the police; he didn’t witness the act; he’s not the one who should have reported the incident to the police.

He reported what was hearsay at the time to his superiors.

You are factually and ethically challenged on this issue. Retire from the thread before you make a bigger ass of yourself. :)

I thought they showed no courage, not to back someone who really needed it at the time.

I'd guess that kid who got raped by Sandusky would say much the same about McQueary and Paterno. Anyone who wants to defend either man should seriously consider if their view would be the same if that kid had been their son or grandson or little brother.

The Board needs to go. So do some of the Regents/state figures, including, apparently, some in state gov’t. This went on too long. People knew. From the janitor on up.

I joked about the janitor knowing and turns out, at least one guy did.

C’mon. If Penn State wants to have any money left, it needs to amputate above the gang greene and cauterize the wound.

could have exposed himself and/or Penn State to a libel suit had the allegation proven unfounded.

Bull. You cannot be sued for libel for reporting evidence of a crime to polic, even if it is discovered no crime was committed.

McQueary is a filthy coward for not stopping the attack and rescuing the boy. Paterno and all the rest are filthy cowards for not reporting to the police what McQueary told them.

The whole lot of them can rot in hell for their cowardly coverup that led to the abuse of more young boys.

Disgusting!

Joe isn't just a coach at the college.

Joe is a board member for The Second Mile.

Joe was supposed to check any accusation of this kind of stuff out and immediately report it to law enforcement. He is required to by both Pennsylvania law and Federal Law.

Not just go to his bosses at the college.

Joe has helped put the college on the hook for millions. Every job in the world will fire you for that from the corner gas station to NASA.

Good bye Joe.

Paterno personally witnessed the incident? That’s a new allegation I haven’t heard before.

The board did the right thing. Have you ever sat on a board? They are liable for this kind of stuff. I’m just sad they waited this long.

In August 2008, Harris attended the 2008 Democratic National Convention, in Denver, Colorado, as part of the Pennsylvania delegation.[9] Harris voted for Obama on December 15, 2008, as one of Pennsylvania's 21 Democratic presidential electors.[10][11]

Its bad enough that the rapes happened and that people kept quiet about it, but to see so many Freepers attack anyone who disagrees with the action of the Board of Trustees as being a homosexual, or a rapist of boys is insane. Franco Harris was married - the last time I heard - and ran as a Republican in Pennsylvania. Disagree with him all you like - you have reason to disagree with him - but try not to act like a liberal and smear than man.

If Paterno reported it, it would have been hearsay and absolutely useless in court.

If McQueary had reported it, it would have been an eyewitness account. The problem was that he didn’t do it immediately. The fact that he waited would have made it his word against Sandusky’s in the absence of a victim. Which means it would have been impossible to prove anything.
