KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Some people are warning that the expected sale of the Kansas City International Raceway could lead to a rise in illegal street racing.
The city plans to acquire 93 acres of land around the speedway. The track, which has been around since 1967, would be turned into a park.
A young driver named Darcie, 17, said racing is a way of life for her.
"This gives me self-confidence to do so many other things in my life," she said. "A park isn't going to do that."
Some people worry that if people can't race legally on the track at KCIR, they may resort to speeding through the streets.
Police clamp down on illegal street racing when they can, but people at KCIR said that the absence of the track will make the work more challenging.
"The police already have problems with it, to get it off the streets," said Kevin, a driver from Eudora, Kan. "If this place closes, where else are they going to go?"
Track supporters said that KCIR offers a legal outlet for people to feel the thrill that they get from racing.

It probably has her fingerprints all over it.
Ahh, she should do like what the former Chicago mayor did for his wife who wanted a park where Meigs field was. Go to the strip in the middle of the night and bulldoze X’s into it because terrorists might land their planes there.
I’d love to have a drag strip near me.
Gotta go 30 miles east for the nearest little chunk of backwater blacktop.
Love those “pinks” grudge matches.
:)
Surely someone can find some rich redneck to buy her digs from her. To him/her it would be as neat as “hell” to live by a dragstrip, and she can go move in next to an actual park. Hopefully somewhere out of the country altogether.
Once again the elite class pisses on the hoi polloi.
True. 'King Richie' Daley did do that.
But if you recall, about a week later -- after the runway and all asphalt at Meigs was completely dug up and all planes removed -- he got a 'very nasty letter' from the FAA telling him to 'Stop'.
They really told him!
;-)
I don't think he, or 'The City', was even fined for that illegal stunt he pulled.
“SUNDAY!!!....SUNDAY!!!....SUNDAY!!!....”
“See 8700 horsepower funny car fury... fury...fury...”
Developers also bought up land near the track to put up housing and replace the track with a park.
Apartments and parks are a mall for drug dealers.
