Newt Gingrich is winning over Republicans.
Over the past few months, the former House speaker has charmed primary voters one debate at a time. The once underdog — dismissed as a has-been when he first announced his run and the laughingstock of the race after he accumulated $1 million in debt this summer and was abandoned by almost his entire political team — has compellingly mixed historical insight, warmth toward his fellow GOP candidates, and rancor toward the media into a formula that has propelled him to the top of the polls.
But is Gingrich the savior the GOP has been yearning for, as the party lurches from one flavor-of-the-month contender to the next? Gingrich, of course, has an impressive political résumé, particularly his 1994 Contract with America. But he also has, to borrow Tim Pawlenty’s term, some significant “clunkers” in his record that conservatives may want to consider before settling on Gingrich as the man of the hour. In no particular order, here are ten items in Gingrich’s record that might give conservatives pause:

Jack Reynolds : 11/15/11 16:43 Gingrich strikes me as a possible Winston Churchill, a man who had his share of mistakes before World War II, but was a great man when his country needed him. Things are going to get bad in this country, and we're going to need a great man to get us through. Romney is a RINO and Cain is poorly qualified although either would be better than the current joke. Gingrich understands American conservatism and he is politically principled. His negatives are personal, not intellectual. That shouldn't matter as Democrats have shown they don''t care about personal flaws -- Obama, Clinton, Kerry, Edwards, et al.-- One of the comments at the end of the article.
I thought it was an interesting one.

I thought of Churchill as well. The right man at the right time. And the lilliputians will try to destroy him.

I am looking at Gingrich differently now. His power and foraging days of his youth are over. He has grandkids. What does he or anyone else think will happen if/when TSHTF?
Patton proved that fixed fortifications don’t work. They won’t now, either. Even cutting off the Hamptons and the Keys and Catalina just flat out won’t do it. There may be a stray spot in the Queen Charlottes or off Greenland someplace, but money will not buy safety.

- Urged the House to repeal the War Powers Act and give the Presidency more power.
- Urged Clinton to expand military presence in Bosnia.
- Supports Afghan War
- Supports Iraq War
- Calls for Iran War
- Supported Clinton’s welfare programs, education programs, labor programs, and environmental programs, as well as most of his foreign affairs programs.
- Supported spending $30B for the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 that shackled gun owners with new restrictions, federalized a number of crimes, and handed the feds police powers that the Constitution reserves to the states.
- Voted to give billions of dollars to United Nations “peacekeeping” operations
- Bailed out savings and loan institutions in 1991. $40B Bank bailout
- He was a draft-dodger during Vietnam, yet advocates foreign interventionism in his political career
- “Distinguished member” of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (Neocon, pro-interventionism group)
- Member of the World Future Society
- Voted for NAFTA, a blatant circumvention of Congress’ exclusive power to regulate commerce with foreign nations. Took power from American people and put it into the hands of unelected bi-national panels, made mostly of foreigners.

Well, If THE Kevin Gutzman said it, it must be true! Of course some of those dictators were our friends and were better than the jihadis running some of those countries now. But, hey! Kevin Gutzman doesn't like Newt, so let's lose the election by nominating Ron Paul, the Walter Brennan of politics.
I got flamed on here when Rick Perry was the savior du jour here — I’d worked for the State of Texas, and none of what has happened surprises me.
I will probably get flamed for this one too, but I recall Newt’s previous deeds. Not the part where he lead the House takeover, but the part where he seemed to lack the willingness to run the House in a businesslike fashion. Where he allowed himself to become a Dem fundraising tool. Where he got himself into ethics problems — probably money problems caused that — and had to be bailed out by Bob Dole’s money before he left Congress.
I recall those items mentioned above, where Newt seemed to test out the political “moderate” center in a failed attempt at a political comeback.
Yes, he’s great to listen to, and I hope to have a beer over conversation with him some day. However, he’s NOT the person who would best fit the job.
Trouble is, of course, I’m not sure any of the GOP people on stage are the right person....

Reiterating Gingrich's record is not "trashing" him. Should we ignore it? And, by the way, American voters turned the Democrats out of power.
Repeating false stories about Newt's personal life would be "trashing", but that's not what this article was about.
