(CBS/AP) SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine has been placed on administrative leave while police investigate allegations that he molested two team ball boys more than 20 years ago.
Bobby Davis, now 39, claimed in an interview with ESPN Thursday that Fine began abusing him in 1984. Davis said that the alleged abuse occurred at Fine's home, on team road trips and at Syracuse basketball facilities. He said the sexual contact continued until he was 27.
Davis' stepbrother, Mike Lang, 45, who was also a ball boy, also told ESPN that Fine began molesting him when he was in fifth or sixth grade.
According to ESPN, the network first investigated Davis' allegations in 2003 but found no evidence to corroborate the accusations and decided not the run the story. The Syracuse Post-Standard newspaper also said that it held off reporting in 2003 for the same reason.
According to a statement by Kevin Quinn, the university's senior vice president for public affairs, Syracuse investigated allegations "inappropriate contact by an associate men's basketball coach" in 2005. But when they interviewed people that the accuser said would support his allegations, they all "denied any knowledge of wrongful conduct."
Fine was placed on administrative leave Thursday while the university looks into the allegations anew.
"We hold everyone in our community to high standards and we don't tolerate illegal, abusive or unethical behavior - no matter who you are," Syracuse Chancellor Nancy Cantor said in an email Friday morning to students, faculty and staff.
Fine denies the allegations and Syracuse head basketball coach Jim Boeheim is coming to his defense, issuing a statement saying: "This matter was fully investigated by the university in 2005 and it was determined that the allegations were unfounded.
"I have known Bernie Fine for more than 40........

Where is Allred? Oh yeah - she just takes female clients on bogus allegations against republican candidates.
I wonder if Jim Bayhiem will resign a la JoePa!
So now it begins.
Is this another real abuse case, covered up by a university? Or this a case of slander and revenge where yesterday’s unsubstantiated allegations become today’s headlines?
The sexual contact continued until he was 27....err? Hang on a minute.
I imagine the sports world scandals will be trivial in comparison.
There is a lot more to this story.
This accusation against Coach Fine was investigated by the University back in 2005 and was dismissed for lack of evidence. Furthermore, the investigation has begun again because a relative has come forward. Also, there was a loan between Fine and Davis that Davis never paid back. This COULD very well be someone looking for money like Boeheim has already mentioned.
As most of us SU alumni know very well, the lefties who run the campus LOATHE all men s athletic teams with a deep hatred.Boeheim does not run SU like Paterno ran Penn State. The hard left runs SU and would do anything to crash Boeheims program. What many people outside of Syracuse dont know very well is that one of the premier communications schools in the nation is located at SU and it is basically a feeder system into ESPN. If Fine was molesting boys for this long, some up and coming reported would have made his bones reporting this a long time ago as a sure ticket to fame.
Lets let this play out a little before condemning people.
There are no organizations in this country that are as bureaucratic, insular, politicized and narcissistic as academia, particularly universities. It is no surprise to me that a professor or sports coach can hide-out in their little protected fiefdoms for years, and continue with such outrageous behavior.
Something smells about this one though, doesnt sit right with my instinct on this, maybe be a “i deserve money” slant.
Good point.
If the Penn State scandal had not occured, no media outlet would touch this story..the only “reason” they are doing so now, they say, is because there is now a “corroborating” witness..even though it’s the guy’s half- brother..who, incidentally, way back when did NOT confirm the original accusation..
So, this case of "child abuse/molestation" continued until he was TWENTY-SEVEN?
This OLD assistant coach was so intimidating that he had his way with the "victim" until the victim was 27 and had to repay a loan from the coach? WTH...
Boy, I’m sure glad the NCAA has made stamping out Native American team nicknames their #1 priority for the past two decades. Aren’t you?
Bernie Fine & Barney Frank
Jeepers. Time will tell.
27????? Was it ABUSE or an AFFAIR?
ESPN had this story as far back as 2003...and chose not to run with it. I suspect that the only reason they are running with it now is that after the Penn St scandal they don’t want to be seen covering it up. My bet is that they don’t believe this either but they don’t want to be seen as “enablers”.
I know. In today’s world, I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t happen. In my day it was making a telephone call to to ask someone if they had Prince Albert in a can..now?? Accuse someone. I’m NOT lessoning the seriousness if it did happen...but...
The University???? This guy talked to ESPN years ago. Who at ESPN will be indicted and fired.
Even the ESPN view of Sandusky case, I expect wholesale firings. Not.
