Super Committee Fails to Reach Deficit Agreement
National Journal ^ | 11/21/11 | Billy House

The bipartisan congressional committee tasked with finding at least $1.2 trillion in deficit reduction announced on Monday it cannot reach agreement by the Wednesday deadline, a stark if not unexpected admission that its efforts have ended in failure.

"After months of hard work and intense deliberations, we have come to the conclusion today that it will not be possible to make any bipartisan agreement available to the public before the committee’s deadline," the co-chairs, Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, and Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., said.

The declaration came late Monday afternoon in a written statement from the 12-member Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction despite last-second discussions in closed-door meetings.

The committee, in the end, could not resolve that Republicans would not go as far as Democrats wanted on allowing more revenue raisers, and Democrats did not want to move on entitlement reforms. Intense messaging by both political parties on which was more to blame is surely to spill out for days, if not months.

The real question is whether we get down-graded again.

keep the good ones we just sent up there that are being told to sit in the back and shut up. Dump the ones that go along with these idiotic ideas. The supercommittee was a massive Boehnner fail.

They were never meant to reach a deal. This was to be used to point fingers at the Repubs.

Did anyone notice they said “release to the public”?

I’m thinking they will do some 11th hour deal that screws us all.

The GOP in Washington needs to learn to play hardball.

The real question is whether we get down-graded again.

The REAL question is if they will laugh and chuckle when they downgrade us.

Are we talking about not reaching a deal that even if they came up with one the budget still grows. Even if we are left with nothing but the mandatory cuts, the budget still grows. What a crock of crap this whole exercise in futility has been.

Predicted by Newt Gingrich in the August debate:

"I think this super committee is about as dumb an idea as Washington has come up with in my lifetime," Gingrich said. "I used to run the House of Representatives. I have some general notion of these things. The idea that 523 senators and congressmen are going to sit around for four months while 12 brilliant people, mostly picked for political reasons, are going to sit in some room and brilliantly come up with a trillion dollars, or force us to choose between gutting our military and accepting a tax increase, is irrational.

"They're going to walk in just before Thanksgiving and say, 'All right, we can shoot you in the head or cut off your right leg, which do you prefer?'" he added. "What they ought to do is scrap the committee right now, recognize it's a dumb idea, go back to regular legislative business, assign every subcommittee the task of finding savings. Do it out in the open through regular legislative order and get rid of this secret phony business."

Exactly. It was also meant to give Congress a break because they did nothing while the committee was meeting.

How do you take and equal number of morons and expect them to come up with a solution that will benefit all the American people? It is really time to clean house and get rid of them all.

Oblame to have a news conference or statement at 5:45 on the Super Committee Failure. He will blame it all on the Republicans and especially those extreme Tea Party members. We all know the what he will say. So now that the planed outcome has come about - the sheep are to get behind Oblame?

This is going to be sickening!
