Chicken jerky treats linked to mystery illnesses, deaths in dogs

Chicken jerky treats may be to blame for dozens of new reports of mysterious illnesses and some deaths in dogs, prompting a renewed warning for pet owners by the Food and Drug Administration.

At least 70 dogs have been sickened so far this year after reportedly eating chicken jerky products imported from China, FDA officials said. That’s up from 54 reports of illness in 2010. Some of the dogs have died, according to the anecdotal reports from pet owners and veterinarians.

FDA officials say they have not been able to find a cause for the illnesses. Extensive chemical and microbiological testing has failed to turn up a specific contaminant and officials did not identify a specific brand of treats. They note that the reports of illness have not conclusively been tied to chicken jerky products, also sold as chicken tenders, chicken strips or chicken treats.

The new warning follows previous FDA cautions about chicken jerky treats in 2007 and 2008. But after a high of 156 reports of illness in 2007, the number of complaints dropped. Now, it's rising again.

Dog owners and vets are reporting that animals may be stricken with a range of illnesses within days or hours of eating chicken jerky, including kidney failure and Fanconi syndrome, a condition characterized by low glucose.

Oh, I hate to hear this. My poor HUGE American Bulldog is plagued by skin conditions, and I spend so much on “pure” food...then, a few months ago I (stupidly) bought a large bag of chicken jerky at Safeway. His skin is still a mess, and now I’m afraid it was that stupid decision of mine.

I swear this is it! I am NEVER buying any food or toy for my dogs with the tag: made in China. I hate to bad mouth a company, but I think I nearly bought a “Hartz” pet toy that said MIC...it looked crappy, and I put it back. Forgive me if I’m spreading untruths...but the point is...check out where that toy is coming from. China puts horrible crap in the rubber.

Oh, and since I mentioned it, my dog is doing better now. It was never life threatening...just that miserable skin that some white dogs have.

Hope everyone’s dog here is safe.

Butthead...is that you?

Yeah, dogs are cool. The new Beavis and Butthead programs are a hoot, too. Seems Mike Judge, the creator (also did King of the Hill, I think)...has figured out the liberal agenda.

Ya got to watch it to understand. Not for the faint of heart...but dang funny.

I gave them to my basenjis for a while, but switched. They didn’t seem to have any problems. Of course, I’m convinced they’re indestructible since they’re 16 years old and still chugging along.

I was being serious. Have one of the dogs sleeping right next to me right now. He doesn’t see so well these days, so we protect him.

Here's old Mason. He's sharing a deer shoulder with a kitten.

He was a real killer, he was. ;-)

But they taste so good and they are cheaper than the other jerky products I eat.

My dog gets human jerky, usually cheaper than dog jerky. Wouldn’t feed her that dog crap jerky...

I avoid any dog stuff made in China. My dog’s favorite treats are by Waggin’ Train made right here in South Carolina. They have a duck jerky that he likes.

Great pic!

My 150 lb Amer. Bulldog shares bones/toys/etc., with my sweet/bratty 19 lb Boston Terrier. I love him for it.

Sorry, for de-railing your comment.

I think dogs are one of the coolest things that God gave us human beings.

Always had them, always will.

I checked our package of Waggin’ Train; USA owned company, but product made in China.
Does your package indicate the product made in South Carolina?

(Jeeze! My dogs LOVE these! Has anyone made them, themselves with a dehydrator?)
