George W. Bush to raise cancer awareness in Africa (Bush defends his Big Government™ programs)

DALLAS (AP) — Former President George W. Bush will travel to Africa next month to raise awareness about cervical and breast cancer, an effort he calls a "natural extension" of a program launched during his presidency that helps fight AIDS on the continent.

Bush, former first lady Laura Bush and officials with the George W. Bush Institute are heading to Tanzania, Zambia and Ethiopia from Dec. 1 through Dec. 5, where they'll visit clinics and meet with governmental and health care leaders.

"We believe it's in our nation's interest to deal with disease and set priorities and save lives," Bush told The Associated Press.

In 2003, Bush launched the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR, to expand AIDS prevention, treatment and support programs in countries hit hard by the epidemic.

I thought the Bush administration did back the abstinence and faithful monogamy programs, which did make a difference in Uganda, instead of only supporting the condom and drug programs, as most other agencies seem to.

How much of a problem is breast cancer in Africa, anyway? It used to be fairly rare here, when women had babies young, and the average life span was only about 60 years. Which conditions still hold in Africa.

And cervical cancer is prevented by the same behaviors that prevent HIV infection.

As far as I know it's never been off limits to speak the truth about a big government RINO. You don't get pass for liberal polices cause you have an "R" next to your name.

He is a good man who did what he thought was best.

Guess what, a lot of what he thought was best was DEAD WRONG. If a democrat President did the same things they're wouldn't be people like you irrationality defending it.

I don’t recall all of the details, but the guy Bush put in charge of the program was, I believe, a professional gay activist. Bush did continue to support abstinence training as an option in the schools, against the wishes of Democrats who wanted it to be all condoms, all the time. But in Africa, I think he basically had to deal with the agencies and NGOs already in place, and with UN influence.

I think Bush’s intentions were good, but he really didn’t think it through. And he was notoriously weak at replacing all the clintonoids and other leftists who controlled the various federal agencies he inherited.

There were some Christian-dominated countries in Africa at that time, and presumably whatever money went to them was better spent.

Karl Rove never tires of reminding us how many books the remarkably inarticulate former president reads, but we never seem to hear any evidence of the knowledge and wisdom books are supposed to impart to their readers coming out of GWB’s mouth.

The Bush presidency marks the beginning of the steepest slide in prestige and prosperity this nation has experienced in over one hundred years, a slide that’s only picked up pace in the Obama years.

Let’s hope it’s not too late to turn it around.

I know an immigrant from Ethiopia living and voting here in Maryland. He worships Obama and hates Bush, he says everything bad now is Bush's fault. He is a braindead socialist. His friends agree with him too and he is bringing over lots of relatives. He wont give a crap about this.
