Grand jury doesn't indict man related to fatal Lake Corpus Christi shooting (TX)

CORPUS CHRISTI — A Live Oak County grand jury declined to indict a man related to a fatal shooting of a father and son in April near Lake Corpus Christi.

Rick Hadley, 56, and William Everett Hadley, 30, of Corpus Christi were found dead April 22 by authorities in the 100 block of Lakepark Circle in south Live Oak County.

Live Oak County Sheriff Larry R. Busby said the man and his son were shot with a handgun about 9:30 p.m. after they confronted and assaulted a 58-year-old man in his front yard.

Busby said a grand jury decided to not indict the 58-year-old last week because it was an act of self-defense. The Hadleys confronted the man, Rick Hadley's brother-in-law, about a roaming dog.

A neighbor heard the argument and went into his house to get a shotgun. As the father and son were distracted by the neighbor, the brother-in-law got his handgun from his vehicle, officials said.

" He fired two warning shots in the ground, still telling them to leave and get out of there," Busby said.

He said the men started to leave, but William Hadley decided to go back. The 58-year-old told Busby that he then shot William Hadley in the head as he stood on his front yard.

"The father then yelled, 'You killed my son so I'm going to kill you,' and went after him," Busby said.

The 58-year-old yelled at him to stop, and when he didn't, he shot him in the head, he said.

Busby said he didn't expect a grand jury to indict the 58-year-old after his office investigated what happened that night. The 58-year-old man was never arrested.

He said if the man was indicted, it would have been difficult to get him convicted.

"People, especially in Texas, believe in self-defense," Busby said. "If someone comes to your house you have a right to defend yourself, and I don't disagree with that."

He said when the toxicology reports on the father and son came back, it showed they had alcohol in their system.

What a nightmare for all involved. The two shot do not seem to be criminals, and were related by marriage to the shooter, who is said to have a bad reputation. They are dead, so they cannot tell their side of the story.

The Grand Jury investigated, and came up with a no bill. I can accept that.

This happened less than a mile from my house (Lake Corpus Christi). I know the cousin of the shooter, who lives a few lots down from me. The pit bulls originally belonged to him. My neighbors and I were going to shoot them after they attacked their dog and nearly killed him, and were always getting loose. He apparently then gave them to his cousin and they were terrorizing their neighborhood. In the original newspaper story a neighbor of the shooter said he was a real bad guy. I can’t say who was wrong here. The dead guys should have been armed.

I read this and don’t quite understand what happened. Can someone simplify this for me?

It’s best to be polite to a man with a gun.

Seems as though you have three people with size 44 coveralls and size 4 hats with guns! My guess is that the gene pool is better off and would have been better still if the killer had been hit too. Morons with Pit Bulls!
