Sharia favours the rich, claim Nigerian rights activists
Boko Harams deadly insurgency is fuelled by their desire to see stricter Islamic law, or Sharia, in northern Nigeria. Civil rights activists have voiced their concerns that poor people would bear the brunt of a more severe form of Sharia.
Sharia has been practised to varying degrees for as long as Islam has been in Nigeria. But in 1999, the then-governor of Zamfara State, Ahmed Sani, called for criminal cases to be tried in Sharia courts.
Civil rights activists in Nigeria complain that Sharia hands down harsh sentences to poor Muslims, while the rich use it to their advantage.
Ahmed Sani, the architect of Sharia in modern Nigeria, is a case in point. He married a child bride from Egypt last year and condoned his actions citing Sharia, which permits men to marry wives as young as 13.
Civil rights activist, Shehu Sani stood up to Ahmed Sani, who is no relation, for those of us who were human rights activists and Muslims we had a duty to our conscience and to our people to stand up to Ahmed Sani. Because we were concerned that Sharia would be used against the poor and to hunt down political enemies.
Several Sharia cases have brought condemnation from the international community. Most of them have involved poor women accused of adultery who face being stoned to death.
But some argue that it is Nigerian legal system that is at fault.
Sharia has afforded women so many rights," says Remi Atunwa, a barrister and practising Muslim. "For example it stipulates that if a woman doesnt want to cook, then her husband is obligated to get her a maid.
But people manipulate the system for political and religious reasons," she adds. "And the average person either doesnt understand the system or doesnt have the means [financial], required to navigate it.
Nigerias 70 million Muslims already have the choice of having civil cases heard in a Sharia law court. Twelve northern states also allow the resort to Sharia in criminal cases. What Boko Haram is demanding is for Sharia to replace common and customary law in the 19 states that make up northern Nigeria.
The group also wants to see a stricter form of Sharia implemented, as in Saudi Arabia or Iran where stoning and amputations are not uncommon. The problem is that there are several million non-Muslims living in these states. And that wealthy Nigerians tend to be able to escape justice more than the rest of the population.

Just where do the Occupy Wall Street “99 percenters” stand on the imposed death sentences against single black mothers in muslim countries?
Couldn’t OWS move their protest outside of the Nigerian embassies in NYC and Washington, D.C.?
Legalized polygamy = “only the rich deserve children”.
Truth is hate. Violators of federal and local hate laws will be banned from the Internet. It is Sharia.. er, I mean in the federal and local law!
In the meantime until Islamists can purchase that kind of law from our elected representatives here's TRUTH!
"...Iran is robbing its own people of prosperity. But the men at the top are getting extremely rich."
BTW if you read the www.forbes.com article, the Hezbollah was the enforcer in the post-revolution days of 1979.. it is still the Islamists' number one enforcer in Iran. Here's what happens when the cars of civilians protesting the repressive actions of their rulers get stuck in a traffic jam.
"Suddenly there's thunder in the air. A gang of 30 motorcyclists, brandishing iron bars and clubs, roars through the stalled traffic. They glare at the drivers, yell threats, thump cars. Burly and bearded, the bikers yank two men from their auto and pummel them. Most protesters scatter. Uniformed policemen watch impassively as the thugs beat the last stragglers.
"These bikers are part of the Hezbollah militia, recruited mostly from the countryside. Iran's ruling mullahs roll them out whenever they need to intimidate their opponents. The Islamic Republic is a strange dictatorship. As it moves to repress growing opposition to clerical rule, the regime relies not on soldiers or uniformed police (many of whom sympathize with the protesters) but on the bullies of Hezbollah and the equally thuggish Revolutionary Guards."
The bullies of Hezbollah are the Civilian Security Force in Iran.
I thought well, well the occupiers will grow into Obama's Hezbollah -- but about all those "99er" spoiled brats can do is run to the MSM for help crying that the police wont let them deny other people their rights.
Nevertheless the '99er" threat is enough for me to demand:
To the wall, street agitators!
(Only partly kidding.)
Shari’ah law favors high testostrone and psychotic personalities. If that has led to an accumulation of wealth through banditry and piracy, then it also favors the possession and retention of misbegotten riches as well.
Saddam Hussein was probably the poster child for this kind of high regard by the world of Islam, and his only fault was picking a fight with another Islamic neighbor. But that was a matter of turf, and not so much a matter of doctrine according to the Arabic Sunni Wahhabi model.
The Taliban of Afghanistan is just a little more extreme example of this kind of thinking, exceot there is not much wealth to exploit in that tormented land.
Sharia certainly doesn’t favor women, who own nothing, not even themselves, and are thus poorer than any person outside Sharia. Among men, Sharia certainly favors those rich enough to buy the women they rape and buy off the families of those they kill. So, yes, Sharia oppresses “the 99%”.

Oh, and because a nice chunk of change came from the sheikhs.
