Cain Wants Illegal Immigration Issue Shifted to States
The Corner / The National Review ^ | 11-27-2011 | Katrina Trinko

Posted on 11/27/2011 6:51:43 PM PST by TitansAFC

Herman Cain indicated today that he does not agree with Newt Gingrich’s position on immigration.

“The way I would deal with those that are already here, which has been my stated position: empower the states to deal with the illegals that are already here, not some, big, grandiose, national one size fit-all. I believe that the states should be empowered to deal with the illegals that are already here,” Cain said CNN’s State of the Union this morning.

In response to whether that meant the states could allow illegal immigrants to “be put on a path toward legalization and toward citizenship,” Cain answered, “It would be up to the states as long as they did not break the federal law.”

But when Crowley used the word “amnesty,” inquiring if that it meant it would be “okay” if the states granted “some sort of amnesty to those who are already living here,” Cain vehemently denied he supported amnesty.

“I’m not saying that at all,” he said

“Secure the border for real,” Cain continued, speaking about what his plan regarding illegal immigrants is. “Promote the path to citizenship that’s already there, and the path to citizenship that’s already there doesn’t say anything about amnesty. Thirdly, enforce the laws that are already there, but make it easier for companies to be able to enforce the laws. And fourth, empower the states. Don’t give the states any special things to do, just empower them to do within the law what the federal government is not doing.”

And Jefferson used “Separation on Church and State” in a letter to the Danbury Baptists. That wasn’t in the Constitution, either.

What does that have to do with the EXPLICIT responsibility of the Federal Government to protect against invasion?

Watch the video for yourselves for pete sake.

http://sotu.blogs.cnn.com/2011/11/27/herman-cain-on-abortion-and-immigration/

The liberals want to change and make up what Cain says to damage him. Crowley is the one attempting to create confusion not Cain. She wants to desperately peel off his supporters as do these NewtTards posting.

Only stupid people listen to the media anymore, and allow them to filter what a candidate says. Go straight to the source. Katrina is a good reporter and had to write something, as you can see from her article, she shows that Cain had to correct Crowley.

When you watch the video, you will see that Cain had to correct Crowley at least 4 times. Pathetic.

The states that border on Mexico, with the exception of California, pretty much know that they need to close the border, don’t they? If the states divided into enforcement states and sanctuary states the sanctuary states would eventually be so run-down by debt and crime that even they would have to come to their senses, wouldn’t they? The only way they wouldn’t is if the feds bailed out those states...

When you look at what happened with Alabama, just the prospect of Alabama actually checking legal status resulted in a lot of illegals leaving, with tax-paying American citizens regaining those jobs. So Alabama gets a net economic gain from that because they don’t have to pay for services for illegals and they get more people paying taxes rather than getting unemployment benefits.

But the neighboring states to which the illegals fled would probably then have higher unemployment, more unemployment benefits, etc - unless they also enacted measures to keep themselves from being attractive to illegals. Eventually, in theory at least, the illegals would settle in one area which would be broke, crime-ridden, and nobody stable and productive would want to live there.

I like how you keep leaving off the part where he said, "as long as they did not break the federal law." It's fun.

Who cares that the US Constitution gives Congress the power to establish a uniform Rule of Naturalization, if Cain says it’s a state’s rights issue, then it must be so.

After all, he is Cain, and he can say nothing wrong.

Oh, but he said we should let the states decide citizenship, and then he said not to do so if it violates federal law.

He clearly doesn’t know citizenship is a power of Congress, but I can hear now the special pleading of those following their own pizza a messiah.

Sure, and abortion is awful but go illegal if you just gotta. That’s Herman Cain. He can get away with anything until the general election rolls around.

Then they’re going to tie this crap around his neck and there will be no place to hide.

So, let’s do it Cain’s way, let’s have California let Chicoms and Islamo-fascists be citizens, and we’ll let Nevadans choose Uzbekistanis and Monacans. We Ohioans will favor Germans and the Scots-Irish, of course.

Oh, and surely SCOTUS will allow citizens not to be recognized by one state if that state just feels like it? I’m sure they will. /sarc.

This is such a truly remarkable idea, similar in it’s incomprehensibility with Cain’s stand on life.

Mr. Cainesty is okay with millions of illegals getting legal status, amnesty, or even citizenship so long as the federal government isn’t doing it.

Say no to CAINESTY!!!!!!

>> That is insane.

Cain’s default position on tough issues involves deferral to the States.

It seems nobody can speak to the issue of the long-stay illegals. At least Newt swung at it.

Today when CNN’s Crowley asked Cain to clarify his position on “targeting” rather than “profiling,” she said she was “trying to get a handle on how you would do this.”

His reply: “Candie, you are trying to pull me into the rhetoric that gets people in trouble.”

Bear that in mind as you try to comprehend his position on illegals.

Once again he talks and an interviewer is utterly baffled. There’s a reason for this.

Herman Cain doesn’t want to be specific, he doesn’t want to be understood. He only wants to be believed in...and to be president.

The man is a fog machine. The more he talks, the foggier it gets.

I've been saying for weeks that Cain is just making this stuff up as he goes along. He wanted to try to distinguish himself from Gingrich (who has a REAL plan) and he comes up with THIS? It's like his position on Abortion, where he is against it, but doesn't think the government should dictate what the woman's choice is. And his idea that a president can't "advance legislation".

It's too bad that Cain isn't the man his supporters think he is. They pretend that Cain thinks like they do and then when he steps in it, they are here to clean his shoes.

This stuff will not be lost on the electorate.

Yes, but that is changeable by executive order.

Really??? President Cain would issue an order to suspend the Constitution? You don't get it, the minute they set foot on American soil they are protected by the Constitution and they have a right to trial. It sucks, but its the law. The only way to fix this issue is to shut down the damn border. Not give it to the states, not give them red cards, shut the damn border down so they can't get in.

There is only one person running who knows how to do it and has an actual record of doing it. You're so damn hung up on in-state tuition you think it's the problem. The in-state tuition law was a reaction to the problem not the cause of it. If you honestly believe that somewhere in Mexico there are families plotting to swim across the Rio because they believe their 14 year old is smart enough to graduate in the top 10% of a Texas High School so he can get a $1,200 discount at Texas Tech I have a bridge to sell you. Stop with the BS, get behind a guy who can fix the country and isn't trying to make it up as he goes along.

“I fear I may have voted in my last election.”

Well one good thing, all our candidates are serious about border control happening including from the federal level, and illegal immigration is said to have ceased all together as the US economy craters. Additionally, jillions have returned to Mexico for the same reason. Now would be a good time to seal the border. Obama, on the other hand, will do nothing and hamstring any state that tries.

Yes, I do think states should be penalized if they don’t implement controls. The trouble is that the foundations of the country/society have lost the whole idea that the rule of law even matters, and I don’t know how we ever get that back. The southern states see first-hand what lawlessness ends up costing, so they want to fight for survival. They are our first line of defense.

If the states cracked down on people being able to hire illegals (including an illegal President, I might add) so they can’t earn a living here and can’t get welfare either.... and the feds made specific plans and actually started building a secure fence along the border... there would be a strong incentive for the illegals to go back home where they could at least earn ANY wage - especially if the US government stopped arming the Mexican drug cartels, creating massacres in places like Juarez.

But it would only work that way if the illegals couldn’t go to some place like CA and get all the welfare they want.

Getting rid of a DOJ that arms Mexican drug cartels and keeps states from enforcing the borders or protecting themselves against invasion by illegals including drug cartels would go a long way in the current environment. Enable people like Sheriff Joe, Alabama, etc, and we could see good change.

At least Cain isn't recommending a local board comprised of a member of LaRaza, Joe - the owner of Joe's Lawn Care, an ACLU member and the local Unitarian minister.
