Banned after accusations of abuse, some gymnastics coaches continue to teach

PASADENA – Charmaine Carnes had only been at Flairs, a Pasadena gymnastics club, a few months in 1978 when she was chosen to ride in the front seat of coach Doug Boger's car. Carnes beamed as she shut the car door, convinced that the ride with Boger, then 30, to a competition later that day was the first leg of a journey that would make her an Olympian. Instead, Carnes said, Boger took her and many of her Flairs teammates to a much darker place.

A newspaper clipping featuring Doug Boger, right, with Flairs gymnast Denise Gallion. Gallion said Boger sexually abused her for three years, starting when she was 13.

"I was 8 or 9, and I remember he had this yellow Mustang and it was an honor if you got to ride with him," Carnes said. "And we would be in the car and it started off with him tickling me, and then I realized he was tickling me in my genitalia and I remember just staring at the gearshift in the car."

You can’t put a sexually mature man in alone for any lengths of time with girls or young women with this kind of thing happening.

Your lack of personal integrity is disgusting.

Your efforts to slander the rest of mankind with your own failings is even more disgusting.

The only group who thinks like you are the Muslims, who regard women as property and dress them like sacks.

So either join Islam, or get psychiatric help before you hurt someone. Because either way, you're sick.

there is nothing in my posts to suggest I believe in magic.

I have only claimed the truth.

And the truth is that - of the coaches I came in contact with - and in knowing most of their athletes as well - through 3 decades now....not one accusation. Not one rumor even.

Again - I’m sorry to disappoint you.

I understand there are examples of it happening - I am saying it is not the norm.

My arrows do find their marks. Your squeal tells more of you than me.

No "group" thinks, individuals alone do. Think for yourself, but please do so from SOME foundation of research and scholarship. The Chinese have a developed tradition that is wiser than your short-tempered remarks, regarding the relationships between men and woman. Have you studied them at all?

In the midst of a shared cultural delusion -- a cultural madness -- a sane man may appear insane to those who are the afflicted. We have such a shared cultural delusion it is clear about matters of sexual modesty, about the rules for propriety of relationships between coaches or group leaders and youth. And we have a cultural breakdown, a true harsh madness, about matters of human sexuality.

Such a madness does not afflict a whole society from just one side, it is two sided. We have the "teachers" who foist perverse sexual ideals upon the young, such as homosexuality. But we also have those who would be good, but whose ideal of goodness is so unrealistic and delusional that it is unable to counter the fierceness of cultural attack by the profane and perverse.

Our American Founding generations came here and succeeded here not because they had horribly unrealistic views of what men were, but because they had very realistic views of human nature.

They would be astounded at how easily we place our dear children in harm's way so casually. That is, we so easily place our children at moral hazard, hazards such as this easy to see exploitation of youth by "high-performance" sports establishments and sports coaching near-priesthoods.

Men’s thoughts of it are more the norm than you are admitting. Those thoughts arise of our nature, and it takes extra effort to keep them from moving into inappropriate action.

And, dear lady, over the scope of three decades, surely in the earlier of them you were much less mature and able to judge action, glances, circumstance and innuendo then you would be today. Maturity is a good thing, when it makes one wiser to the situations the younger and unwiser might get caught in, without that wise maturity of experience by someone in the crowd at that time.

like we see in many other cases...children become adults and then they understand what they experienced as children was abuse.

While I was growing up in this sport, we were unfortunate in our community to be experiencing “scandal” involving children in another institution I belonged to.
Everyone knew about it because people talk. Kids talk - especially to each other.

Sometimes they do. I have no guess of the percentage of how many remember the situations as "abuse". But some do, it may be many or most, or maybe only a fraction.

In any case, remembered or not, how does it impact the child now become an adult? Some will learn to be more vigilant good shepherds of the young entrusted to them, others will become more the wolf, and apply the lessons as to how better to appear like an old sheep in the midst of the young or even better (albeit rarer) to wear a shepherd's frock and carry a shepherd's staff and so have access to the entire flock and spy out the most select of prey.

I suspect from a lifetime of observation, that too many bury the memory away in some deep recess, and at the level of conscious action behave like those once forced into submission by a predator, and become even somewhat more prone to allow their litter to be accessed by the predators.

well - access is the key here.

I have, unfortunately, witnessed a sad situation where a predator was allowed access.
These people gain trust, and then they follow a pattern...they create situations where they can be alone with the kids.

As we see in the original article to this thread...look at all the alone time.

Anytime you see an adult - anywhere - traveling alone with a kid - staying in hotels - insisting on counseling sessions behind closed doors...this will create problems.
This guy even housed the girls - dangerous territory.
Even if the adult is guilty of nothing, it opens that person up to false accusations.

For this same reason...when a male doctor conducts a physical exam on a female patient, he will often call in a female doctor or nurse to observe.

These sort of steps need to be taken in regards to adult/child interaction everywhere.

Really? Let's take another look at your post #5...

You can’t put a sexually mature man in alone for any lengths of time with girls or young women with this kind of thing happening. It is a basic natural impulse...

When you used that broad brush to slander all males, you also came into JimRob's house and referred to all men, including JimRob, as being untrustworthy around children due to some predisposition to molestation.

Do you not understand? You are calling all men, including the owner of FR, child molesting perverts!

Your idiocy is right up there with those moslem imams who claim that a woman uncovered woman is like leaving meat out where the cat can eat it. You are a sad, sick, twisted person.

If all of the men in your social circle can't restrain themselves from molesting children, perhaps you should take some time to evaluate those you choose to associate with.

Jim - How does bvw's claim that all men are prone to molest children square up with Free Republic's philosophies? Are you alright with being branded a child molester by bvw, based on your masculinity?

Just for the record, I am a man.

Which is more than I can say for a sissy boy who goes calling for his mommy when he feels beset when someone he tries to bully punches him back.

RM: maybe you remember a hurricane thread, eh?

You have one fairly newbie Freeper gloating over helping get others banned, and who otherwise generally taking the stupid train in discussion.

And then you have one ancient Freeper, me. One who attended the March for Justice I and II, one who has met you. One who stood outside the White House with the DC Chapter back in their early years. One who knows Don and Terri Adams. It was because the union thugs beat them up at a Clinton rally ad were not prosecuted for that beat down that YOU called for that original March For Justice back in October 1998. And that rally contributed greatly to Clinton’s impeachment.

You might acknowledge something for a Freeper who has contributed year after year sine 1998 here. One who remembers the heros and twerps both and how they were dealt with.

But in 2011, it’s no longer 1997-98 eh?

Don’t empower dim bulb bullies. That’s my advice, offered gratis. Worth all you pay for it.
