Allen West: Cain should 'move on' and exit the GOP presidential race
The Hill ^ | 11/30/2011 | By Alicia M. Cohn

Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) said Wednesday he would advise Herman Cain to let voters “move on” from the distraction of his campaign.

Cain told his campaign this week it is time to “reassess” in light of the resurfacing of old sexual harassment allegations and new accusations this week that he carried on a 13-year affair.

"Beyond reassessing his campaign, he probably needs to understand that he is a distracter for what's going on right now and we should move on," West told WMAL’s radio show “Morning Majority.”

West, a Tea Party favorite, indicated Cain is already out of the running and the GOP nomination field has come down to “a two-man race.”

He named Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, currently the front-runners in the polls, as the two most likely contenders. West said Romney, who has polled at around 24 percent nationally for months, has “hit a plateau” and called Gingrich, who came up from well behind to become a front-runner within the last few weeks, “very viable” as a candidate.

“Speaker Gingrich is the next in line for conservatives who are looking for someone who is not Mitt Romney,” he said. "But he does have that 200-pound rucksack on his back with a lot of the personal baggage that people are going to come at him about.”

Gingrich reportedly mentioned West, along with Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), earlier this week as possible vice presidential candidates on his hypothetical ticket.

West said he would have to pray about and discuss the opportunity with his family, but he promised: “If I can make a difference, then I'll answer that call.”

Allen West, Jim DeMint and George Allen should enter the primaries then.

How about just Jim DeMint.

You believe the accusations of an unstable, bankrupt stalker over the words of Herman Cain? Really?

Cute - go ahead and give me a plausible explanation for their 61 phone calls and texts - some of which are in the middle of the night.

I’m dying to hear your explanation - but please - enough with blaming the media or political operatives. Just give an explanation of why Cain gave her money and gifts and the excessive calls and texts.

Until this latest accusation, I was a Cain supporter, but his tepid response convinced me that he is out of his element.

I don't even care about his innocence or guilt. I cared about how deftly he dealt with this challenge...and he bungled it.

A swift defense doesn't necessarily cost a lot of cash. But it needs to be potent or the campaign cash will stop coming in.

While there is still a small (and I do mean SMALL) chance that he can redeem himself as a captain of the Cain campaign, the bloom is off the rose.

People said the same thing about Jesus, who was accused of spending too much time with prostitutes and tax collectors.

Maybe Herman Cain is generous, and has a big heart.

And I haven't seen anything the much ballyhooed Wood has done, except release a premature, and incredibly stupid, statement.

I would have thought Wood would have said something like "how frikken stupid would I be to make a public statement before I have had a chance to confer with my client?"

But he did--just as you said--he went ahead an open his big mouth. I don't know exactly what that tells us...but it tells us something about what is going on behind the scenes.

Unfortunately I do. They have records of Cain texting her during most of November - up until a week ago.

Jesus wasn't running for President.

People (adults not Democrats and Liberals) expect action from a man running for president...they expect him or her to handle an attack effectively when it arises. If he can't handle an attack on his person, how can he handle an attack on the country.

Poor Cain has stumbled all over the stage trying to refocus the campaign on his 999 plan while observers are saying "here is a good chance to show what you can do with an impromtu challenge...have at it. Show us what you are made off...swat this thing down...don't try to change the subject."

no proof?! 61 texts and phone calls to a personal cell phone is surely concrete proof that herman cain was having an extramarital affair that went on for 13 years even when he was suffering from cancer... i believe he’s as guilty as the msm says he is cause they wouldn’t lie and as we know, sexual conduct in the highest office matters to the msm./sarc

ugh... i am sticking with CAIN so he can stick it to the media as Citizen CAIN

Mittens and Newton Leroy are the distractions. Cain is a breath of fresh air - not a rehashed, reinvented, regurgitated RINO. Go Cain! And to Allen West, I have but one word: “NUTS!”

ONE text was received at 4:47 am. And we don't know what time zone each person was in. No other text were received between 12am and 6am.

Jesus wasn't running for President.

You're right. And even more important, he wasn't having sex with those prostitutes.

“I like West a lot...but I disagree with him on this.”

Same here. From what I know of LTC West, he is a fine person and was a fine officer. He certainly does not deserve to be disparaged w/the term “RINO.” In my opinion LTC West may have been given bad advice on this one issue. So be it; he spoke his mind and everyone is free to accept or reject his opinion.

As for me, unless there is concrete evidence that Mr Cain has done something wrong, I will stick w/Herman Cain; as I do not consider the accusations made against him credible; because the three identified and one “anonymous” accusers have a documented history of being untrustworthy (or no history at all in the case of the supposed anonymous individual).

For those who are backing other candidates at this point; consider the fact that, if Herman dropped out at this time, it would not only embolden and empower the forces behind these scurrilous attacks; it would enable them to consolidate and amplify their attacks upon each of the other candidates.

Cain needs to stop denying his affairs and bow out so we can support someone that has also had affairs? How is this opinion not supposed to try my patience forget about insulting my intelligence.

Ah, and what are the contents of those texts. Could you post those, or point me to where those are published?

Oh Geez, the Newt supporters really amaze me.

If it comes to morals Newt should have never gotten into the race. He's cheated on two wives, boinked an intern at the same time Clinton was getting it on with Lewinsky. Married his intern....every time I see Calistra I will see a woman who had no morals either - in the front seat of Newt's car with her head in his crotch.

Now tell me Herman Cain should drop out of the race based on allegations - not actual facts like those we can attribute to Newt Gingrich's behavior.

This woman’s list of text messages and phone calls has not been revealed beyond being just a list, IIRC. Is there any evidence that Cain actually sent her messages or called her, or are all of these messages and calls from her ro him?

I am not ready to believe this woman’s story. And I am disappointed that someone I admire as much as I do West is suggesting that Cain drop out. If he is innocent, he should stay and fight. He owes his reputation and his family that much.

Hm. You must not be very familiar with Scripture; otherwise, you would have understood my point.

Jesus spent time with hurting people, and was accused by religious leaders at the time of being a “friend of sinners.” That affiliation was meant to be an insult, to call into question his character, to taint his reputation.

Herman Cain seems to be a man with a big heart, and has a record of helping people who are unemployed, or who need money to get through a season. So, because he happens to spend some time helping such people, we are quick to judge him as “guilty by association.”

No, maybe he’s spending time with hurting people because, like Jesus, he simply wants to help.
