The federal government reported Friday that on average, its employees are underpaid by 26.3 percent compared with similar non-federal jobs, a "pay gap" that increased by about 2 percentage points over last year while federal salary rates were frozen....
The pay gap in the Washington-Baltimore area was calculated at 36.9 percent, slightly below the 38.1 percent reported last year. Officials said a variety of factors could have caused that result, including changes in the mix of jobs and switching thousands of Defense Department employees into the general schedule and out of a separate pay system that is being phased out....

I seemed to have heard that the greater Washington area is not feeling the affects of the economy like the rest of the country. I suggest we fired half of them and reduce the pay of the rest so they can suffer with the rest of us.

One size fits all pay scale. Evaluate in high cost of living area. Equals “pay gap”.
With the COLA for that area, actual “pay gap” is the other way around.
Also, having to quit or commit a felony in order to be fired, is worth a 30% “pay gap”.

Most of these federal employees would wet their little girlie panties if they had to do the kind of work a business owner or manager does.
Federal employees can't be fired even if they do little or nothing on the job. They get generous time off, great health benefits and an exorbitant pension.
In return they show up when they feel like it. Perhaps they sit in a meeting or two about some useless bureaucratic nonsense. More likely they do little or nothing.
LOL! Federal employees conducted a "study" that illustrated that federal employees should be paid much better.
The methods BLS uses have been evolving, in part because funding is being cut off for a salary survey that it traditionally used in the federal pay comparison.
So they didn't have the funds to conduct a study, but the study they didn't conduct shows an increase in their suffering.
BLS presented an alternative set of figures based on a different set of data that showed the pay gap to be still larger.
They have another statistical mangling that can show even greater suffering on their part!
The conservative Heritage Foundation, for example, concluded last year that federal employees are overpaid by 22 percent on average.

So, let me see if I got this correct...
Within-grade (i.e. step increases) are still allowed as are raises after promotions.
Well that only leaves cost of living allowance (COLA) increases.
Harumph! Don’t sound like much of a “Pay freeze” to me.
And, in keeping with full disclosure....
I’m a federal employee, working for the Department of Defense.
If they are not equating duties and they are not looking at total compensation, which includes benefits, the report is not worth using as puppy potty training paper.
Compare what these these Fed. employees make compared to Virgina state employees with similar duties just 20 miles away.
I was thinking the Feds were overpaid by 26%.
Heck, just the fact that the government can't hire illegal aliens probably accounts for a big chunk of the statistical anomaly in the Heritage numbers.
Then through in that you can't be fired(unless you rat on someone in the department) and you only have to work at about 80% of the same person in the private sector.
As someone who worked for the federal government for 36 years and retired at age 56, there is no doubt that federal workers are better compensated (wages and benefits) than the private sector and the gap is widening. I get a six figure retirement salary, the goverment pays for 72% of my health care insurance costs (about $9,600 a year,) and my pension is linked to inflation increases. I will receive a $3500 annual increase in my federal pension starting tomorrow.
What does a civilian get paid to work eighteen hour days in a Mideast war zone? How about a buck private?

Should he make the average, or above the average? If so, how much, or should he make LESS than the average?
If you can figure out an answer to that fairly fundamental question (which any board of directors is going to refer to its compensation committee) let us know your thoughts on the matter.
That wasn’t about comparable jobs. The federal government has few cashiers or swimming pool guards for example.
