COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A soldier and his wife stopped a robbery on Tuesday night when the soldier pulled a gun on the assailants and fired, police said.

The husband and wife had just been transferred from Fort Hood to Colorado Springs. They were taking a walk in their new neighborhood at 10 p.m. when they were approached by two masked assailants, police said.

When the assailants ordered the soldier and his wife to the ground, the soldier told police he pulled out his handgun.

The soldier told police the men started to run off, but when one of them turned around and appeared to pull out a gun, the soldier said he fired one shot in their direction.

Bad work on due diligence prior to buying a house.

What kind of pathology causes people like you to insist on blaming the victim for a crime?

Horse shit.

Free men ought to be able to live where they choose, free from threats from lowlife criminals.

The soldier took it upon himself to defend the territory he freely chose. Good on him!

One should always look for any street named MLK Blvd. Probably should keep one in the chamber.

Most people who PCS into a new area do not immediately “buy” houses, untill/unless they observe local conditions first hand.

But thanks for trying!

Good guy stops the criminal.
I’m surprised it made the news.
OTOH..

The soldier had a CCW permit.

I'm asking myself, not you, why that is relevant?

Free men don't ask permission.

Nicely stated, soldier! ;-)

Neighborhood clean up. Give the guy a medal and a free box of ammo...

Soldiers can’t always find housing in good neighborhoods that they can afford. Soldier pay still sucks.

The base is on the south side of Colo Springs and from downtown south the price of homes is cheaper than on the north side of town. The crime is a bit bigger of a problem on the south side, too, although bad things can theoretically happen about anywhere. However, the south side is more suited to the income of young military members. It is always a trade-off.

And good, even great, things can happen about anywhere too, as in this case, a neighborhood in need of justice, gets some help from a great prepared neighbor soldier.

Ought to be, yes. Seldom happens unless you are unbelievably rich. Even then threats don't stop; they just come from similarly equipped people. I don't want to play his effort down in any way, but his work only started. The criminals ran away. Now, if they read news, they know who shot at them. Their "respect" among other gangbangers is eroding. The soldier may be deployed at any time, leaving his wife alone. The police will do nothing. A bad situation all around.

The soldier took it upon himself to defend the territory he freely chose. Good on him!

He wasn't legally allowed to go far enough. Troops aren't even allowed to go far enough on a battlefield. Criminals are coddled because they are "necessary" to maintain the need for the strong government. Free and safe citizens may start getting ideas.

So he saw a gun in criminal's hands and shot at him. Missed. What if he hit the bad guy but the other criminal picks up the gun and runs away? The prosecution would have a hatefest built out of this case, shooting "an innocent." A bad situation all around.

It's true that soldiers aren't paid millions. His options were probably limited. I personally would rather live in a small apartment than own a house if I can be robbed near it. Homes in some places just aren't worth it however you slice it.

It’s bad form to extrapolate a stupid liberal response onto the entire country.

Here in South Carolina, if a shooter hits a bad guy, nothing will happen, other than getting a pat on the back from the sheriff and local judge.

Curiously, my daughter just returned from visiting friends in Colorado Springs and almost had her purse snatched in a sports bar.

A guy ran by her as she sat with friends at a table and grabbed her purse. She immediately took off after him and because he was slowed by a group of patrons as he was running through the door tackled him outside flinging herself onto him as patio furniture went flying. He dropped her purse as she grabbed him with one hand (her other hand was still holding her phone), said something about how he didn’t have it anymore and ran off.

The waitress in her high heels and bare midriff saw what was happening and took off after him down the street and almost caught him.

What’s up with Colorado Springs anyway?

Sounds like the women are getting pi$$ed. If a man won't do it a woman has to. No one stopped him while he was running in the sports bar...I guess no men were in there...

I may get beat up for this, but when I first heard this story, the cynic in me thought that this might be a false police report to justify having fired a weapon inside city limits (for whatever reason).

Two guys in masks, without initially displaying any weapons, ordering a couple to the ground?

At that point, the other criminal has armed himself and can be shot, too.

When I was there ('97-'99), the area around B Street was the only place that was economical, hence many ne'er-do-wells lived in that area. Just outside of the north side of post, homes were selling in the $300,000 range. Heck, I lived at Cheyenne Crossing Apartments and it took all my BAQ and some out of my pocket.

Just think- there I was, at the base of Cheyenne Mountain, and never once did I see a Ja'affa, or an alien spaceship...
