Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has surged to the largest national lead held by any candidate so far in the race for the Republican Presidential Nomination.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Republican Primary Voters finds Gingrich on top with 38% of the vote. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is a distant second at 17%. No other candidate reaches double-digits.
The national survey of 1,000 Likely Republican Primary Voters was conducted on November 30, 2011 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

Yowza, wonder if the graph will sustain? Newt will have to watch every word he says now, but he knows how to handle the MSM. I like it when he lays into them. Interesting last night on Hannity that he said he was going to hammer home all the Alinksy, Ayers, community organizer stuff. Go get em’!
At this point, I don't care at all. Anybody but Romney in the primary, anybody but Obama in the general.

I don't think the average voter cares. Bill Clinton faced the same thing in 1992. IT'S THE ECONOMY STUPID was the battle cry.
When push comes to shove the average voter votes his pocketbook over his religion.
Gingrich can communicate a positive message better than all the other candidates combined. He has baggage, but he carries it well.

He may have been immoral at one time, but that may very well be in the past. People can change. I was immoral at one time. Not that I’m perfect now; far from it. But since the Lord Jesus came into my life, and I was offered and received eternal forgiveness and grace, I’m a new creature, spiritually born into a new life-a life of righteous, integrity, honesty, and caring...26+ years now a new creature. So, too, Newt Gingrich may be a new creature...a new creature in Christ. I give him the benefit of the doubt.
Annulment means essentially that those marriages should not have happened.
Divorce says that you were once married, but now you aren't. Divorce is a matter of civil law.Annulment says you were never truly married in the first place. Something necessary for a valid marriage was missing. Annulment is a matter of Church law.
In Gingrich's case, I can see this, especially in the first marriage. His wife was his high school geometry teacher who began an affair with him while he was a 16 year old high school kid. We consider that to be child abuse and endangerment and violation of a position of trust. In our state many have lost licenses for that behavior, and when it is provable, many have gone to jail.
That marriage was not made in heaven. In this case, though a non-Catholic, I can really see the point.
There was something inappropriate in that relationship from the beginning.

I agree with that. Obama has the media on his side, a system unwilling to give any information about him, and a billion bucks to run attack ads.
Against him he has a country that is becoming a wasteland, and Gingrich’s job is to convince America of that.

Lets be real about Reagan.
Reagan actually signed an amnesty. No verbal gymnastics or legalization. He came out and said he supports amnesty and used the word.
Reagan was in chrage of an operation that dealt arms to Khomeini. He also supported the arming and funding of Islamic radicals in Afghanistan to take down to the USSR that ended up having a lot of consequences down the road.
Reagan cut and ran from Beirut. He never finished the job with Ghadaffi. He went after Israel on a number occasions including their raid on the Iraqi reactor. He cozied up to the Saudis.
He raised taxes multiple times. He never once signed a balanced budget. He tripled the natl debt over his 8 years. He eliminated no cabinet agencies after saying he would.
He appointed 2 SC Justices who were the decisive liberal votes in the upholding of Roe v Wade, Kelo v New London, Grutter, Lawrence v Texas and every other disastrous decison of the past 25 years and have been huge disappointments t oconservatives. Not Clinton or Orbama, Reagan appointed them.
Despite all that and more he was a great President, a great leader, a cgreat conservative.
No one is 100% pure. But don’t hold Newt out as some liberal or RINO. Fiscally his record as speaker was far better than Reagan’s ever was. You can say, well, of course if Reagan had a GOP house he’d have done that, too.
The point is that Reagan for all his gifts was never able to deliver a GOP House. Newt did.

I guess this thread has punched my ticket, and I am now getting off the Cain Train. Too bad. I guess Newt will do. I don't have to hold my nose to vote for him as I would any other frontrunners (Mitt).
I really wish I had asked for his autograph when I saw him at the Atlanta airport in the late 90s - I wanted to go beg him to run for President (I still had '94 revolution fever). We locked eyes, and he smiled as if to say "Hey, someone recognizes me", but I was too chicken to say anything to him. All I could do was stare and grin back. GAH!
Only a few months ago, Newt was a dirty word on Free Republic.
Using the word ‘Newt’ could get you banned under the no profanity rule.
It’s really funny what’s happened.
I’m not criticizing Newt, he took the golden opportunity of the debates and rose to the top on his debating abiity.
His main rival was Mr. Cain who is now effectively a non-factor and will probably drop out.
I also read there is a strong possibiity of Santorum dropping out citing the health of his daughter.
Rick Perry has been horribly and unfairly vilified although I still have hopes for him.
I hope we dont go with Michele Bachmann. I like her very much as a congresswoman but not sure she has the emotional stabiity to make it through a campaign. She’s gone hysterical on us before.
No sane person would vote for Ron Paul.
No true conservative would prefer Romney.
So, that leaves Newt.
If we end up with him I dearly hope that he will be consistent and steadfast and not flit from one good idea to the next and throw some bad ones in along the way.
I know some of his supporters trust him totally on the drill, baby, drill thing. I dont - not completely. I think his facile mind may toy around with cerebral but impractical ideas about alternate energy.
These ideas have their place on the back burner while we go forward with real solutions.
But, if Rick doesn’t make a comeback, we’d better pray that Newt is as good as he sounds.
So vote for Mitt...Or Obama.
