Herman Cain, the insurgent populist whose candidacy has been ensnared by allegations of sexual impropriety, said Saturday that he is leaving the race for the Republican presidential nomination, saying that the allegations have cast a "cloud of doubt over me and this campaign."
"As of today, with a lot of prayer and soul searching, I am suspending my presidential campaign," he said at an event in Atlanta. "I am suspending my presidential campaign because of the continued distraction, the continued hurt . . . on me, on my family, not because we are not fighters, not because I am not a fighter."
Cain's campaign had sent mixed signals as to his future since Ginger White, an Atlanta woman who claims to have had an affair with Cain for more than a decade, went public with her story earlier this week. While Cain has said he has been "reassessing" his candidacy, he also, at times, has been fiercely defiant, suggesting that unnamed enemies have been trying to do him in and vowing to press forward.
"The pundits would like for me to shut up, drop out and go away," he said. "I am not going to be silenced, and I am not going away."

i hear you but where there’s smoke, etc...the best defense i heard about the Cain situation was not from Cain but Hannity who said how could he (Cain) have an affair when he was in the middle of stage four cancer...i never heard/saw anything from the Cain campaign, except his lawyer, just yesterday, demanding phone records from the latest accuser...
the conservatives love her, the base loves her..but independents don’t and they are the deciders in this election.
Moreover, the whole election will be more of what we saw before..and Palin gets engaged in the media battle.

It was a mixed message and I should have added the sarcasm tag after the second paragraph. I cringed everytime I read the word ‘Racism’ and ‘Cain’ in the same sentence. As POGO was said, I have meet the enemy, and he is us, or something to that effect.
I have ‘some’ problems with all the candidates that are left for us to choose from.

I was not on the Cain Train, but this is a sad day. Consolences to his fans. Like Newt said, Cain elevated the political discussion. I do hope he continues to fight to get Obama out of office.

I agree, it will not really matter who gets in office, the bones have already been thrown. With The House voting to detain Americans indefinitely and the Senate Agreeing, this is no longer The United States. It is almost time to clear the decks and get small. Tug the forelock when the “man” comes round and practice my “StepnFecthit” routine.
I like Cain and would have voted for him, but it is not to be. It might be time to get a portrait of Obama for the living room wall for when the Military round up begins, I will be less of a suspect. :)
