Raped Afghan woman freed without condition of marrying attacker: Lawyer

Kabul, Dec 3 : An Afghan women who was raped by her husband's cousin and was jailed for adultery has been set free without being pressurized to marry her attacker, according to her lawyer.

According to Kimberly Motley, Gulnaz's lawyer said that Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai office personally clarified that the women does not have to marry the man who attacked her honour in 2009.

Kimberly said that 21-year-old Gulnaz would be released with no pre-conditions and would then be free to marry whomever she chooses.

"She doesn't have plans for the future, she just wants to get out [of prison]," the BBC quoted Kimberly, as saying.

She added that Gulnaz had a "safe place" to go after her expected release.

Gulnaz was just 19-year old when she was convicted by a court for adultery in 2009 and was sentenced to serve 12-years in prison, even though she tried to prevent the attack.

Since than she is in Kabul's Badam Bagh Jail, serving out her sentence with her rapist's child.

The case has drawn international attention to the plight of many Afghan women ten years after the overthrow of the Taliban.

Human rights groups have pointed out that hundreds of women in Afghan jails are victims of rape or domestic violence.

It must have lost something in translation. She was raped by her husband’s cousin yet she’s free to marry whomever she wishes??

So if you are a muslim woman and you get raped, you are subject to arrest, conviction and sentenced to 12 years in prison and then can be forced to marry the rapist? Am I reading this correctly?
This is the beautiful “Religion Of Peace” we are supposed to embrace and celebrate according to Bush and Obama. This is the diversity that we need to encourage in our country?
Right - we’ll get right on that - although my wife seems to be hesitant to go down this road. Women....s/

She’s free to marry whoever she wants, but if she doesn’t marry the rapist-cousin, her family will probably stone her to preserve their honor.

Ya, but if she does have to marry him she gets to aggravate him for the rest of her life.

Almost. What's left out is that when she gets out of prison (assuming she survives that), her relatives will murder her as part of an honor killing.
Isn't it great that we spent so much in lives and treasure to bring democracy to this former backward country?

They are not a backward country. No country on earth in the past has ever been this insane.

Like I said many times: Islam is Satans answer to Judiasm and Christianity. Mohammed was not born in the year 570 AD but 666 AD. They just changed it so more people would accept Islam.

Remember as well; 666 is considered a lucky number in Islam. Women represent life, are life, are the creators, are the direct process of pure souls from God which the Devil hates so he demands they be covered and oppressed.

Aslo consider the symbol of Islam is the blocking of light. Holy darkness covering white light. That's not the moon that symbol, but light. The sun, the moon, any light. It is a closing of the door of hope. Darkness, evil, oppression is holy to these Devils.

I see that backward supertitious religious beliefs are not the sole domain of Islam.

This is indeed, good news! I am sharing this.

Congratulations to all the brave men and women who actually changed the world in Afghanistan that it now allows women to be free of the oppressive cultural dictates that make her suffer for the rest of her life through no fault of her own.

This woman, and women like her should NEVER be forced to suffer a life sentence of torture for a screwed up inhumane practice. The Taliban are evil for forcing anyone to do this and other religion-based “justice system” and “correctional institution.

Thanks again for posting this. You’ve made me very happy to hear this. I can only hope more women will receive true justice and that those proposing treating other humans that way will suffer the consequences of their actions at the hands of the authorities.

All children are loved. It doesn’t have to be all negative. There are many women who have raised wonderful children whom they love very much, that were conceived in such a manner. It’s not the child’s fault... And, this is her baby. She may feel blessed like almost all mothers do.

Not being forced to marry her attacker is such a huge step forward in Afghanistan as well. She nor her child were killed, either - this is the kind of thing some choose to kill their wives/daughters/sisters for.

I’m sure right now, she is feeling what freedom is, and I pray she and her child are able to make a good life for themselves - preferably somewhere very far away from her attacker.

As someone else pointed out, it is not a religion but a type of government.
