Statement by Gov. Rick Perry: U.S. Senate Should Reject Nomination of Liberal Judicial Activist Caitlin Halligan

AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry today issued the following statement:

“As New York Solicitor General, Caitlin Halligan used her liberal interpretation of the law to target pro-life Americans, gun owners, and gun manufacturers, and otherwise use the law as a liberal political tool. The last thing the American people need on the second highest court is another liberal judicial activist, like Ms. Halligan, who lacks respect for the U.S. Constitution.

“The nomination of liberal activist Caitlin Halligan to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals should be immediately withdrawn by the President. If the President refuses to withdraw this misguided nomination, the U.S. Senate should reject her appointment to the second-most powerful court in the country.”

Ms. Halligan’s confirmation has been vigorously opposed by the National Rifle Association, Gun Owners of America, and Committee for Justice. Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously rejected her confirmation earlier this year. In 2003, as Solicitor General of New York, Halligan attempted to hold gun manufacturers liable for criminal acts committed with handguns. She filed briefs in federal court arguing for the unconstitutionality of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, which the National Rifle Association described as providing “essential protection…for the Second Amendment rights of honest Americans[.]”

Halligan also filed an amicus brief in arguing that federal RICO laws should be used against pro-life groups. She repeatedly attempted to hijack the federal court system in order to impose her own political beliefs on the general public.

Very well said. I am thrilled you as a lurker were influenced by what we posted here on Governor Perry. Even after all the abuse Perry and Perry supporters have gone through for months.

That really makes it a non issue. Only people who desparately want to find a reason to hate Rick Perry could possibly still be upset over this.

Thanks. I’ve seen what you describe, and to me, it’s inexplicable. You folks have done a great job of forging ahead, though. The information you’ve posted has been excellent.

Sorry, but Perry is the better man and the better candidate and as long as he’s in the race, I’m sticking with him.

I will support the eventual nominee but not going where you suggest right now.

Funny how Newt seems to be forgiven ‘heartless’ problems, gal problems and Nancy problems, while people on here are still nursing hurt feelings on one word uttered by Rick Perry.

normy, I’m with you. I will make a similar pledge. I’m tired of slamming Newt anyway. I think his support is large but paper thin.

But some people just live their life hoping for a Perry thread they can get on to insult Perry.

Bless you, Catherine. You are exactly the sort of person we’ve been posting on these Perry threads to.

It’s hard sticking with it because we have to endure so many nasty people, but we realize that many lurkers check these threads out and some of them have some sense.

You are one. thank you.

You've noticed that, too, huh?

And I'm beginning to think my reaction to being called "heartless" was, well, an over-reaction.

It's actually a shame. I thought once the field narrowed this crap would end and it subsided for about a week but I guess everyone is now trying to rally around, who a friend called "roly, poly jiggle jiggle marshmallow man".

Now I can say that here because this is a Perry thread and I'm just having some fun. i wouldn't go to a Newt thread just like I wouldn't go to a Cain thread and trash them. I will trash them on my guy's thread though, especially in defense of my candidate.

I think you have a right to vent somewhere. I’m trying hard to reform about posting stuff on Gingrich threads.

For a while I thought it was a good thing and ‘my duty’ to tell people stuff I remembered about Newt that they might not be aware of.

I think everyone is aware of Newt’s shortcomings now, but they believe he is our best chance, I guess.

We need a bounce !!

I agree with the venting part. One thing I have noticed is Perry threads are picking up interested parties, not just anti Perry nuts. Even some of the former Perry attackers don't like the choice between Newt and Mitt and are considering Perry.

Hot Air has an article on Perry's rising and in their poll taking a distant second to Newt but second none the less.

As far as Newt goes, there is so much bad history on that guy and he has no money or ground game. His egg-headed responses are already getting grating. I am sure Mitt is going to go hard after him in this Dec. 10th debate and take him down a few notches.

I believe that once we get past South Carolina it will be Mitt and Perry all the way.

If you think about it, Mitt and Newt are both fighting for the same money. The big establishment. Perry is vying for the grass roots and money from the state Governors connections. We may even have Rove on Mitt's side and Haley Barbour on Perry's side. My bet is on Barbour.

We have us a civil war in the Republican Party right now between the state powers and the national powers.
