A HEADTEACHER got a roasting yesterday for turning the school heating OFF on one of the coldest days of the year — to save the planet.
Pupils shivered in coats, hats and scarves as temperatures fell to just 1°C (34°F).
Head Rob Benzie switched off the radiators to show how the secondary school could cut its carbon footprint.
But some staff and parents slammed the "barbaric" plan.
One teacher called it "beyond stupid" and added: "It was absolutely ridiculous.
"I've never worked in such cold. I'm all for saving the planet but this was barbaric.
"Nobody could work properly and kids could not even grip a pen through their gloves." The mum of a 12-year-old at Ansford Academy in Castle Cary, Somerset, said: "She was shaking when she came home. I was absolutely furious."
A dad added: "Turning the heating off in December is just mental.
"I can't believe the kids learnt anything. I'm very angry with the school."
But Mr Benzie, 52, defended the "successful" experiment last Friday — locally the coldest day of the winter so far — and vowed to stage regular "eco-days" at the 640-pupil school.
He said: "We cut the heat to see if we can lower our carbon footprint. We let pupils wear as many jumpers as they liked.

Did he open the windows too? How do you get a large, previously heated building full of people and lights to go down to 34 deg F in one day? Even if he turned off the heat the previous afternoon. Even if it got below freezing overnight.

That's a mighty big but you have there. Suddenly, when you're inconvenienced, your cause doesn't make you feel so special anymore, does it?
Hmm. Now I am wondering if the boiler outage at my daughter’s school yesterday was due to a malfunction or because some idiot turned it off. My daughter said she was so cold she was wearing her coat, scarf, and gloves in the classroom yesterday. Since we live in a liberal part of Oregon, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was another stunt like this.
When I was a kid, they would cancel school if the boiler went out, but apparently now they would rather kids catch more colds instead.
if we want to save the planet... why don’t we turn off the heat and AC in the JAILS first, before we get to the schools.
It’s infuriates me that prisoners get treated better than our children.

kids are a little spoiled these days...but this is going to extremes. I remember when I was a kid, by law they could not go lower than 60 degrees in a public school. They maintained 62 all winter long. We dressed warm.
Kick that dumb piece of crap to the curb, metaphorically.
How the past generations of survival have changed. I was shoveling coal into my schools furnace in the 6th grade. I didn’t need no stinking badge. I was very healthy and 2 other “more strong” students helped out.
Here is an idea, why don’t we eliminate this moron’s carbon foot print from the face of the earth. This idiot is the type of individual who would turn off the heat and set fire to the classroom so as to eliminate the use of those mean, awful energy companies raping the earth.
I’ve got another news flash for those imbeciles. Influenza and colds have maximum pulmonary (coughing and sneezing) transmission at 40F and low humidity. By his actions, that dumbass could cause an epidemic in his school, and for that many children, this could include fatalities.
It will sound very convincing at their funeral to say that “They died to save the planet.” The truth is, they died because of a greedy and opportunistic school administrator, who subjected young children to a dangerously unhealthy ‘environment’.
The proof will be to inquire what happened to the money saved by turning off the heat for an entire school for a day? I will give you odds that nobody knows anything about any missing money, my guess is as many as a couple thousand pounds a day.
