Perry Could Rise in Iowa, Polling Data Shows

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, whom some pundits had written off as the GOP's nominee, may find a second coming in Iowa, if new poll data holds up.

As Mitt Romney's campaign has suffered a startling decline in recent weeks, only to see Newt Gingrich eclipse the former Massachusetts governor's front-runner status, the battle for the Iowa caucuses set for Jan. 3 has become a wide-open race.

New survey data prepared for the Perry campaign and shared by a source close within the campaign shows that the Texas governor may be poised to do much better in next month’s Iowa caucuses than earlier polls predicted.

The survey by the Austin, Texas-based Baselice & Associates firm shows Perry firmly in third place with 13 percent — trailing Gingrich’s 29 percent and Romney's 19 percent. The poll was conducted Dec. 3-4.

But the internal polling data shows that Perry’s “strongly positive” rating has jumped 6 points since the firm’s previous Iowa survey, just three weeks ago.

And, significantly, Perry’s positive rating among likely Iowa caucus-goers is at a commanding 67 percent. And a stellar 71 percent view him positively after having seen one of his commercials.

Other numbers that suggest a potential rise: Perry stands at 78 percent positive among self-identified tea party members, according to the survey.

But he also enjoys strong support among Iowa’s undecided voters, at 71 percent............

Perry may be the GOP’s comeback kid. He’s getting better in the debates, and his record as governor, overall a very successful record, still stands. When the voters take a serious look at Newt’s personal baggage and Romney’s flip-flops etc., Perry may be the one standing tall at the end of the race.

I’m serious... I think Perry has Alzheimers or MS or has mini-strokes. He can’t communicate.

Having seen Perry in numeropus interviews, speeches and ads it's clear to me that you have NO idea what you're talking about and just chose to be negative for the hell of it. That crap is really getting tiresome. Or maybe it's youy who has alzheimer's.

I want to like Perry, and I do from a personal perspective. But it would be painful to watch him debate Obama.

McCain was bad enough. I could only take 10 minutes of one of the debates, when I groaned, rolled over, and went to bed, with this sinking feeling that all was lost.

Of course. If the narcissists in Iowa and New Hampshire actually stayed committed to anybody, they would cease getting the media attention which they so crave.

I know there are those that say he would be a disaster debating Obama. The answer to that question is just don't debate him.

Sen. McCain would not GO AFTER Obama tooth and nail on the campaign trail.

Gov. Perry will. When the Bush-Rove-Hutchison Machine set up a 2010 Primary challenge against Perry, he came from 20pts back and finished 20pts ahead. Now Kay and the Texas establishment is withholding their support from Gov. Perry but that will change.

1. It's painful to watch Obama, anytime.

2. Perry would love to debate Obama...it would come naturally. Obama has been attacking Texas since he was sworn in! Perry does not like Obama!!!

I’ll take Perry over another old D.C. insider, especially one with enough baggage to fill the Titanic.

Weren’t Dole and McCain enough to demonstrate that people don’t want those types of candidates?

Expectations for Perry in a debate with Obama would be very low, probably even lower than those for Dubya.

No one will watch the debates anyway and people realize that got slick talked in 2008 and won’t fall for it again.

Rick Perry has a very expressive face, doesn’t he?

It will be great for artists and pundits.

He’s human, not plastic.

He doesn’t spend all his waking time thinking about the cameras but rather on national and economic security for the country.

Of course Governor Perry *can* communicate!

When Rick Perry does make a mistake, it’s not about the basics of God, Life and marriage.

Each dropped or added “g” or “s” is amplified because that’s the media theme. It’s the only theme they allow. It’s worse than white noise, drowning out the ads, interviews, personal statements, and small group speeches -— much less his actual record of governing.

He’s made some mistakes, but none like Cain’s “Government shouldn’t be involved at all in the family’s decision, but should make abortion illegal,” or Gingrich’s more recent “Life begins sometime, maybe it’s successful implantation, maybe not.”

Jim Robinson removed one of my threads and I was waiting to be banned for days, because for months, Cain couldn’t tell us what he meant about abortion.

Gingrich’s revised “life begins at conception” is unconditionally accepted.

But Perry’s excellent interviews, consistent position on life, marriage and freedom to practice our religion get drowned out by the shouts about “Perry can’t communicate.”

” Who wouldnt rather see a Perry-Gingrich competition, rather than one with Romney in it? .. “ <<<

I share your sentiments! I wish Rick well in these first three primaries, because I trust him in governance. These primaries are surely the opening gate to the future of the race. Thankfully, he has the early money available to try to buck the bridle off through South Carolina.

Traditionally, after South Carolina the game begins to get set, having been winnowed down to usually two very real potentials, a couple of power houses teaming against one another for the finish.

God be with us.

"Rick Perry has a very expressive face, doesn’t he?"

Yeah, especially when he's dumbfounded, you should be used to that look by now, its his most common reaction.
