SC to settle election scuffle in TX - map signed by Perry accused of diluting minority voting power

Supreme Court to settle election district scuffle in Texas as a map signed by Rick Perry is accused of diluting minority voting power

Texas’ March primary will likely be delayed after the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday blocked the use of state legislative and congressional district maps that were drawn by federal judges.

The court issued a brief order late Friday that applies to electoral maps drawn by federal judges in San Antonio for the Texas Legislature and Congress that would have ensured minorities made up the majority in three additional Texas congressional districts.

The justices said they will hear arguments on January 9th, likely delaying the scheduled March voting primaries that would use the maps, to the end of May.

The judges issued the new maps for the 2012 election in Texas after a lawsuit was filed in San Antonio over redistricting maps drawn by the GOP-led Legislature.

The maps were to remain in place until the lawsuit was resolved.

The Supreme Court’s order brings to a halt filing for legislative and congressional primary elections that began November 28.

....In the second of two separate court cases in the redistricting fight, a federal court in Washington has refused to approve the Legislature’s redistricting plan without a trial, agreeing with the Justice Department that there was sufficient evidence to question whether it hurt minority representation.

Like other states with a history of racial discrimination, Texas can’t implement new maps or other changes to voting practices without federal approval under the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

The state asked a court in Washington to sign off on the maps, but those judges refused.

That case is continuing......

Not any more sad than you, honey. You're one of the biggest offenders to the very thing you're admonishing others for.

As for the mods, I'd bet top dollar that you've complained numerous times about posts on Perry threads.

Now, if you truly are sorry, why don't you apologize to the people you called idiots. I've pinged the 3 I can remember. Looks like your offending post was removed so I'm not 100% sure who it was.

rintense & altura,

This infighting accomplishes nothing for the conservative cause, which is to defeat the Marxist b@st@rd in the WH. Please call a truce.

I’ve complained twice, both times because of disgusting sexual innuendo.

At least that has stopped.

I don’t believe that post was pulled. I’ve never had a post pulled yet that I know of.

And isn’t truth a defense for libel?

When have I offended? I don’t go on threads about your candidate, whoever the heck that might be, and say disgusting things about him or her.

I just quietly post on Perry threads about the things I like about him. I just rationally try to answer unfair comments and insults.

I called you sad because I think it’s sad to spend your posting life going on threads about a candidate you hate and trying to gin up others to join you.

I wish I could understand the motives here. Perry is not yet a threat to whoever you’re supporting, yet you act like he is.

I still remember how you turned against a good man, George W. Bush.

So, no, I don’t understand you, and, yes I think it’s sad that you’ve become such a hater.

You are right, buckeye and I wish I’d read your post before responding to rintense.

She knows how to push my buttons! LOL

I hereby pledge that, as God is my witness, I will never post to rintense again.

If she will make a similar pledge the silly, playground stuff will grind to a much-needed halt.

And that is the problem, right there.

Why don’t you go post on another thread.

You’ve made your mark on this one.

Enough.

I can post where I’d like to. Not my problem if you can’t handle opposing views and criticism.

They really get animated over the idea of a strong conservative president.

I wonder who they support and why they’re so against Rick Perry who is the true conservative.

Do you know who their current candidate is?

This isn’t just impacting congressional districts but local as well. We can see some of these issues here in town where the attempt is simply to redraw the districts to expand them to follow population growth. Liberals stepped in to sue to stop these. The proposed maps are completely jacked up to try to find some mythical balance, when in reality, it just keeps the poor in poor districts going to poor schools. Exactly opposite of what they claim to want.

Drawing districts is one of those silent battles going on all around the country.

Rick Perry who is the true conservative.

HAHAHAHA! Wrong. If he were really the 'true conservative' in this race, he'd be winning, wouldn't he? Now, he's polling below Huntsman and Paul.

Who knows, he might still be on the court .
You spend as much negative energy on Perry as I spend positive , from all appearances.

I do not know. I think dirtboy is for Gingrich. I think a lot of them are former Cain supporters but I don’t know where they took their alligiance.

I wish they’d say so that we could try to understand but for some reason they are reluctant to.

I’m not ashamed of my candidate. It’s on my tagline and has been since he announced.

The Dan Neil sign that was near Miller’s Auto was gone about the time he gave up on the lawsuit.

There are so many good reasons to vote for Rick, but due to his “cow-pie things” it will be like going to a Rangers game back when the Stranger Ranger fans wore paperbags on their heads to the games.

................ just the other day, he showed he doesn't even know the number of Supreme Court justices, something most kids learn in junior high. He has shown me no indication that he is doing the preparation required for the office he is seeking.

Interesting question on it's face, the answer could be either 8 or 9. (8 SCJ and one Chief SCJ). Some do talk about them that way.

Do not let Perry's West Texas way of speaking put you off.

Perry may or may not win the Primaries, but he’s darn sure shaping the platform for the better.
