It can take one appointment to do a mess of damage. This wasn’t one of those “Oops, I didn’t know how bad he’d be” types, this was a willful promotion of a liberal Democrat activist. Just one is all it takes. I do indeed find it remarkable that not a single Perry disciple in this thread finds it distressing in the least. They’ll stick with their phony idol no matter how horrid he is and continue to lie on his behalf about how “Conservative” he is.

Look at the Court, look at who was originally appointed by the Governor and then elected and re-elected. Your opinion of the Governor’s appointments is not shared by the voters.
No one knows whether or not Rodriquez would still be sitting on the Court with Jefferson and the others the Governor has appointed (I think all but Hecht, Wainright, and the guy who beat the guy who beat Rodriquez, Green.)
What has been asked and answered is why every living former Texas SC justice endorsed Smith’s opponent in 2004. The justices and the voters agreed with Perry.

Perry appointed this liberal to TX Supreme Court and his soulmate GW Bush put him on the Federal bench. EPIC FAIL.
What was it that Perry, Cornyn and Hutchinson seemed to have against Steven Wayne Smith? (I honestly don’t know.) It appears to be some kind of dust-up between Perry and the Bushes.
As I wrote, Smith’s sin was beating Perry’s protege. For that, Perry had to destroy him. Yet one more reason why Perry’s candidacy for President is not only a non-starter, so is his intolerable tenure as Governor. Texas deserves a helluva lot better.
