As California Mandate Looms, Some LGBT Curriculum Already In Place By Debra Goldschmidt

In 10th grade English at Los Angeles’ Grover Cleveland High School, Danielle Taklender's students read the book "Luna" by Julie Anne Peters. It's a story about a transgender teen.

Taklender has been teaching the book for seven years without any fanfare or push back. It’s getting noticed now as her school district takes the lead in developing a plan to comply with the first state law mandating lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender history and social science curricula. The California law, which takes effect in January, stops short of dictating how schools are to comply and leaves that up to the districts and schools themselves to figure out.

Taklender uses "Luna" to expose students to new vocabulary and different ways of thinking about pronouns. The students discuss gender identity versus sexual orientation, as well as gender roles in literature. Taklender said she teaches this book the same way she teaches every other book.

She says the only negative feedback she has run into was a parent who once requested an alternate assignment after the class finished reading the book.

“No students ever say they changed their sexual orientation because of it,” Taklender said.

The new law, called the California Fair Education Act, also requires schools teach about the contributions of Native Americans, and people with disabilities. It also bans instructional materials that adversely reflect on a person due to their sexual orientation. The requirements are actually an expansion to the education code already in existence, which requires lesson plans to include various ethnic groups.

But it is not without controversy. Some opponents have religious objections, others say it’s part of sex education and belongs at home not in schools. Others simply don’t want this taught to their children.

Terrific....a LGBT curriculum is bound to balance the state budget...clean up the cities...get a handle on illegal employment and expand the economy.

Does anyone out there realize what a field day, future Dean Swifts or Lewis Carrolls are going to have with this? I can think of several bizarre satires on the idea, even while typing this brief comment.

Oh, to find a way to wake up those who blissfully embrace the absurd, as social reform!

"Others simply don’t want this taught to their children."

The reason that the teaching unions and the State want these subjects taught is that they, themselves cannot spell (subject = English), they cannot add (subject = Arithmetic) and they cannot write. Until we get a Governor who can really 'blow up the boxes' (thank you Aaaaarnold) nothing will change and your children will continue to have bags of self esteem about their uneducated status. Take away their calculators, iPhones and TVs and make them damn well work and learn! . . . /rant

The LGBT acronym is being upgraded in the interest of diversity and multiculturalism, to LGBTPB, with the additional letters on the end representing Pedophiles and Bestiophiles.

I'm really quite exhausted with people continually complaining about public education in this country, while their own children attend public schools.

This article is about the billionth story about why our schools suck; stupid policies are not new.

Unless Americans decide to do something about it rather than just sitting around complaining and being "outraged", you can most certainly count on more of the same.

Private schools and homeschooling are an option after all!

Where are the so-called "good" teachers who are protesting and **REFUSING TO IMPLEMENT THIS SICK PERVERSION**????

(Crickets!)

Remember that sound of crickets when you turn your child over to the state kiddie workers this coming Monday.

Personally, I do not know why other conservatives don't share my concern, urgency, and alarm. One more generation of this and our nation will slide permanently into the sticky abyss of tyranny. Yes! It is **that** serious!

And....A lot of so-called "good" teachers will have foolishly aided, abetted, upheld, and supported our nation's demise. Personally, I will not have a government teacher for a friend. They are either too stupid or too evil to be a friend.

Dang, whatever happened to Silas Marner, Jane Eyre, or Pride & Prejudice? Too hard for today’s 10th graders?

Yes, we homeschool.

If there is no mass exodus, there is no reason for the schools to change, or even get better.

Sadly, most can’t afford private education. Especially not if they have multiple children. Yet another reason I favor a voucher system.

I hear you, and I don't think it will take another generation. I believe we are already down the rabbit hole of group think, no morals, no ethics, anything goes idiocy, and there might not be any coming back from it.

I homeschool and I have an aunt and uncle who own a private school in southern California, so when we get together we often discuss schools and teaching.

I asked them just last weekend what they thought of the voucher thing. They don't like the idea at all, and they made two very good points about why they don't. My uncle said that anyone who takes, or receives, money from the feds can expect strings to be attached, and that the things that make private schools superior would no longer be allowed. He also thinks that if every kid was allowed a voucher, that private schools would no longer be able to choose their students, and would have to accept any applicant or be accused of discrimination.

He is right.

If you can't afford private school and you won't homeschool, then parents who have children in public school should not stop until schools and teachers stop with the propaganda and start teaching core subjects. March till there is no more DOE, no NEA, no feel good crap that results in American children being some of the most ignorant on the planet.

Do you see any so-called “good” teachers marching? Hm?

Well....I suppose protecting their paychecks and pensions are more important than the children.

Of course not. I don't think very many people really care enough to do anything about it, just like everything else that is wrong with this country. Most just like to shake their tiny fists and complain.
