County supervisors may take the unprecedented step of banning the local importation, sale or posession of bullfrogs, part of effort to save other amphibians. Bullfrogs are native to the eastern U.S. but have infested local waters such as Antonelli Pond and Loch Lomond, preying on smaller species such as the endangered California Red-Legged Frog. They can also spread disease to native species, and are difficult to eradicate.
Based on a recommendation from the county's Fish and Game Advisory Commission, the board voted on Tuesday to consider enacting a ban in February, but also to urge the state to finally enact its own ban.
Seen by some cultures as a food source, American bullfrogs are now found in 15 different countries.
aaaggggg
Profiling frogs, damn. Bunch of racist.
Eat moar frog legz
Why not just leave a copy of the endangered species act out there in the swamp with the part about not eating the California Red-Legged Frog highlighted. I’m sure the bull frogs will comply.
From Wiki:
The non-profit organization Land Trust of Santa Cruz County (LTSCC) acquired Antonelli Pond
During the past several years, conditions at Antonelli Pond have deteriorated. Invasive plant species have outcompeted many of the native plants and the number of bird, mammal, reptile, and amphibian species has declined. The trails have erosion problems mainly caused by unauthorized vehicle usage. Other damage is caused by trash such as beer bottles. Also, many of the benches, stairs, and fishing platforms have been vandalized.
Some invasive species have caused severe impacts to the natural community surrounding Antonelli Pond. The most damaging species at this site are Conium maculatum (poison hemlock), Rubus discolor (Himalayan blackberry), Hedera helix (English ivy), and Delairea odorata (cape ivy).
Just tell the hippies they’re hallucinogenic when dried and smoked.
I believe they lick them.
Okay, you bullfrogs. Come out with your fins up.
Someone should alert PETA about this discrimination.
It sounds to me like the frog has already left the barn.
When bullfrogs are banned...
Yes, stick up a whole bunch of signs written in frog asking for their papers.
Jeremiah was a bullfrog
Was a good friend of mine
I never understood a single word he said
But I helped him a-drink his wine
Tragic at the same time.
Mmmmm... frog legs.
I dispute that they are “difficult to eradicate”.
Rednecks have been known to make them real scarce when hungry.
So much you just gotta lay off ‘em a while to keep your frog population healthy.
What about the jumping frogs in Calavaras County?
I remember one of The Simpson where Bart leaves a frog behind in Australia.
