I could potentially support a texting/emailing ban, but banning cellphones altogether is overkill. Most drivers are quite capable of talking and driving at the same time, especially using headsets.
This recommendation is DOA.
I can’t find in my Constitution this particular enumerated power for the federal government to do this. Can somebody help me out here?
That would be a good reason for me to ditch mine and save a ton of $$ every month.
Thank God for the Federal governmnt pointing me in the right direction when it comes to my behavior. If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t know what to do.
I am a reasonably good driver, but I don’t like to talk on the phone while I drive, it’s very distracting. Texting while driving is just plain stupid. Not sure it should be illegal, since it’s awful hard to enforce, but it needs to be made not worth doing - something like if it’s proven that you texted before an accident you void your insurance coverage.
I have worked as a truck driver, I see people fiddling with a lot of things.

Call this idiot from your car ..
The statistics are that 28% of all accidents are caused by texting/cell phone usage. But you people here are more concerned with “your rights” than people’s safety?
What messages or phone calls are you taking that could POSSIBLY be so important that you’d put the lives of others in danger? And yes, there ARE emergencies, but if they occur you can pull over and call for help. If they occur on a regular basis, you have real problems.

Truckers, cabbies, cops, have used hands free radios/phones for decades, and so should free people.
Whatever happened to citing for distracted driving, for which texting and cell-phoning certainly qualify?
Nanny State PING!
Texting and emailing while driving are stupid. I don’t believe the studies that say talking on a cellphone is as dangerous as drunk driving. This list says otherwise.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_motor_vehicle_deaths_in_U.S._by_year
This is a list of motor vehicle deaths in the United States by year. On average in 2009, 93 people were killed on the roadways of the U.S. each day.
The number of deaths and deaths relative to the total population have declined over the last two decades. From 1979 to 2005, the number of deaths per year decreased 14.97% while the number of deaths per capita decreased by 35.46%. Traffic fatalities in 2010 were the lowest in 62 years.
Good luck enforcing a cell phone ban on the american public. I can drive, talk on the phone and watch for cops. Nobody will obey a law like this.
Same goes for snow.
I am glad the Obama Admin. is bringing this out. It will truly endear him to his moonbat base.
How about they ban teen girls from saying “ohmagawd” and “awesome” more than 5000 times in a 3 minute time period while on a cellphone?
If you are going to ban cells including Bluetooth hands free, you must logically ban talking to and listening to passengers conversation. Idiots!
I don't text when driving and I generally use hands free device for talking when driving. I do remember early one night I pulled over too text in a parking lot and a cop almost imediately pulled up too see what I was doing. You just can't win. Control Freaks run our government and Control Freaks wanting Nanny State Protection laws will vote for them. It's all for da children ya know.
So this calls for the typical solution of bureaucrats. Dumb down, drum down and tie down all of society to the lowest bar and common denominator set by the dumbest and most irresponsible 1% of the masses.
