The numbers keep getting worse for the nations education system.
In the 2010-11 academic year, 48 percent of public schools - a record high - failed to meet the adequate yearly progress benchmarks established by the No Child Left Behind act, according to a new study by the Center on Education Policy, a nonpartisan think tank.
D.C. Public Schools ranked near the bottom, with 87 percent failing to clear the bar, the report says. Only Missouri was worse, with 88 percent of its schools falling short.
Wisconsin schools performed the best, with 11 percent missing the mark. In Maryland and Virginia, 45 percent and 62 percent, respectively, didnt make adequate yearly progress.

Bet George W Bush is proud of his legacy with Teddy Kennedy. Teddy would probably be proud too, but it’s probably a little hot where he’s at right now.
The solution is obvious. The schools need more money, every classroom needs a computer, every student needs the latest iteration of the iGadget-du-jour, and more integration of the core-queer curriculum.
I’m sure we’ll be hearing soon from 0bama that, if we would just pay higher taxes for schools, they would be improved....
In our county, the new, overpaid school supe wants to bag NCLB standards - and our kids here are continuing to do badly on SATs and math tests...particularly the minority students...
Can anyone say “...the bigotry of low expectations...” in Ebonics?????
This is probably due to one or more of the following factors:
1. Kids are just stupid, genetically, since the lower a person’s IQ, the more likely they are to breed in the US.
2. Culture is a stronger determinant of success in education than the schools themselves.
3. NCLB is crap, as is all Federal education standards and programs, and is best handled locally.
4. The NEA sucks.

I can tell you in Montgomery County, Maryland... many of the middle and high schools have gone way down on the testing. The reason why is the huge number of illegals. One high scoring student can bring the scores of low testing students up... that has been done for years (it is the reason why GT and magnet schools are set up in “more diverse” schools). What is different now is that the one high testing student cannot bring up the test scores of six failing students. With “urban flight” and the huge increase of illegals... even the historic high testing schools are dropping like flies.
NCLB is a joke. I know someone who teaches English as a second language and if a non-English speaking kid from Japan arrives on Monday and the test is on Wednesday, that kid takes the test and it’s counted.
Special ed kids take the tests too, and they drag down the school. So a school with a normal, bright population that does well on SATs might find themselves not meeting adequate progress — not that it bothers the parents of the achievers because they know NCLB is a crock and that their kids will do very well for themselves and get accepted at top colleges.
All children will be proficient, blah, blah, blah, by 2014? Um, I don’t think so.
Ditch the Department of Education.
Failure to meet minimum standards should be grounds for closing the public schools & contracting out to charter schools. That would at least force the retirement of lots of poor teachers.

2. In Texas which was the model for NCLB, not Teddy Kennedy, the number of kids in all races that can read at 8th grade level has improved to one of the best in the country. Reading at 8th grade level means you can read and understand Hemingway or Mark Twain.
3 The NCLB program has a window of 12 years, the kids in kindergarten 12 years ago should either be able to read at their grade level or something is rotten with the whole system. It is impossible for a school system to have a child for 12 years, to know he/she has to pass tests and the system can't get it done. 12 years prettty long time to create failures in reading, writing and math.
the reason is you can’t shut down any department without an act of congress AND the support of the citizens. You won’t find 50% of the voters running to congress and crying to end education, so you have to get consrvative action to make the people getting government money to act responsibly. Now the rules say if the schools fail then they kids can move taking their federal moeny with them to better schools. That makes the unions very upset, because they don’t want to make teachers work hard enough to pass the test - they want to teach them condoms, gay sex and commie theory. But if they kids can only study what is on the test then there is not time for JUNK.
