(Emily) MILLER: Choosing a gun
The Washington Times ^ | 12/09/2011 | Emily Miller

Posted on 12/16/2011 10:03:54 AM PST by aimhigh

In my quest to obtain a legal gun in Washington, D.C., I've gone to the registry office, taken a 5-hour course, filled out paperwork and met with the city’s only dealer. I’ve now fulfilled any requirements that can be done before giving the city the serial number of my new gun, so it is time to decide what to buy.

I recommend a compact Glock 40.

This thread will be fun.

That’s a large frame revolver. It may not fit her hand. The best general purpose handgun for a non “gun person” is something K-frame size and chambered in 357 Magnum, but loaded with 38 Special +Ps.

Too many variables. It’s not like asking what’s the best LCD TV for the money.

She needs to go to a range, try quite a few and see what appeals to her.

I’ve been looking at the Ruger LC9 and the beretta PX4 Storm. Good luck!

They’re easy to use, but for real stopping power nothing beats a howitzer.

You need to add an all steel, preferably stainless with at least a 3” barrel, better yet 4”.

Anything shorter and you can shoot your own fingers off. In a panic situation it's easy to put your fingers over the end of the barrel if it's only 2”.

I hope this was toung in cheek. If that is your "expert" opinion, you hardly have the experience or stability to handle firearms or give advice on them.

If weapons are that difficult to legally get in DC, why not just go over to the nearest public housing area and buy one from the locals?

In the source she states: Since Washington doesn’t allowed concealed carry (or any carry), I knew I wanted a full-size gun.

Haven't followed her series of articles but if she travels she should look into the Utah concealed permit.

That permit would give her 31 states in which to legally carry.

In which case she would be in the market for her second handgun! (Although it is not immediately clear whether she would have a problem getting that weapon into a DC airport.)

If you know what you want, and why, get it.

If you don't, get a Glock in 45ACP.

You are correct; bigger holes are better! If Emily wants something traditional and useful, she should get a Commander sized .45ACP. It is the 100th anniversary of the 1911 after all. Next best choice would be a .40S&W Springfield Compact XP. Otherwise, go for the gusto and see about an MP5. Don’t mess with Emily, she’s got a gun.

I believe only Reagan National is technically within the district. After the district was laid out, Virginia took back all of it coming from within Virginia up to the western/southern bank of the Potomac. As I heard it when I lived in Arlington, Reagan National is built on fill extending out into the Potomac, and so is part of the District of Columbia. Dulles or BWI are usually better choices anyway.

No it wasn't tongue in cheek.

I've actually met someone that shot their own finger off with a snub nose .38.

He was a dealer at a gun show and wouldn't sell a 2” for that very reason.

He knew how to handle a gun. When a guy pulled a gun on him in his shop and tried to rob him, he pulled his gun and shot. His finger was over the end of the barrel.

He didn't even know he'd shot his own finger off until it was all over.
