WASHINGTON -- The Securities and Exchange Commission has brought civil fraud charges against six former top executives at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, saying they misled the government and taxpayers about risky subprime mortgages the mortgage giants held during the housing bust.
Those charged include the agencies' two former CEOs, Fannie's Daniel Mudd and Freddie's Richard Syron. They are the highest-profile individuals to be charged in connection with the 2008 financial crisis.
Mudd, 53, and Syron, 68, led the mortgage giants when the housing bubble burst in late 2006 and 2007. The four other top executives also worked for the companies during that time.
The case was filed in federal court in New York City.
In a statement released through his attorney, Mudd said the lawsuit "should never have been brought" and said the government reviewed and approved all of the company's financial disclosures.

Civil only, no criminal charges. It’s political cover for Obama who’s in bed with these guys.
They’ll settle for some cash and get to keep the rest.
Was Newt an employee of Fannie & Freddie, or was he paid a consulation fee. Has Newt done something criminal? If so, he should be charged and tried. If not, it’s a non-issue. His problem is not what he did, but the spin his opponents are putting on it. If Fannie & Freddie called you and offered you a million dollars few several hours of consultation — would you not take it? And what would be wrong with that? In America, we call it Capitalism. Of course, many don’t believe in Capitalism anymore.

The SEC does not have the authority to bring criminal charges.
I have never believe the Govs figures. They have been blowing smoke you know where to keep the sheeple from knowing just how bad everything really is.
Now they are going to throw a couple of guys under the bus to keep the sheeple from thinking TO MUCH about the Frank,Dodd,Fannie and Freddie etc etc disaster that brought the whole country to a stand still.
When the Repubs get control in 2012, I personally would like to see a full blow Special Prosecutor and Lawyers from around the Country to go after every single POLITICIAN that started this mess. Maybe a go ole RICO type investigation. Especially since they have circle the wagons to protect each other.
"The SEC is wrong, and I look forward to a court where fairness and reason -- not politics -- is the standard for justice." [Bold is mine].
Good luck with that one.
why hasn’t Newt been charged?
Nothing wrong with using one’s inside the beltway connections to make a buck or two. I just want to know what he did to earn it.
Do u know exactly what he did to earn it?
It may be a non-issue to you, but to many, it is an issue.
At least we know how he paid for his Tiffany Diamonds.
You should know better. The GOP will not lift a finger in investigating this criminal activity.
They will leave it out there hanging and use it as a “campaign issue”,
not actually make anyone responsible.
Plus Franklin Raines and James Johnson. The guys who created the mess to start with.
Mudd and Syron amount to the designated bag-holders...
I can't see why it would -- there are certainly cases where criminal charges went nowhere, and civil charges were brought.
I don't know about criminal cases, but I believe that in civil cases, defendants can name others as "third-party-defendants", charging, e.g., that they are really the ones responsible for the problem. If these defendants have real pit-bull lawyers, the possibilities are endless!
Deceptions are hard to do in the age of the internet. People are still wondering where are the jobs and why aren’t the crooks in jail? Obama’s threat of more taxes, regulations and implementation of Obamacare took out the jobs recovery. Being a leftist one would figure he would go after the Wall Street bankers with ideological zeal to prove capitalism sucks. He did not but cuddle them for more campaign donations. People also see through that.
Correct and without criminal penalties white collar crime will go on. Why is destroying people’s economic lives not viewed as just as wicked as rape or other brutality?
Call me when they charge Senator Dodd and Representative Frank.

My feelings exactly. These crooks were enabled by their political masters. We’ve had a glimpse of the rewards Dodds got for looking the other way, but have yet to see the full story on Frank.
A name is conspicuous by its absence. Where is James Johnson in these indictments?
I clicked on this post because I expected to see their names in big, bold letters.
It sucks to be so disappointed. lol
It’s my understanding that he ran a Consulting Business. A consulting business offers advise when consulted about certain issues. I’m a preacher. If Freddie & Fannie called me, and offered to pay me for some business advise, I would be more than happy to offer it. I suspect anyone in the country would do the same. People still have a right to operate a business and get paid for it in this country, despite the liberal philosophy of wanting to deny people that right to pursue life, liberty, and happiness. Thousands of people receive tax payers dollars for services rendered to government agencies. Only when those services are rendered illegal in some fashion are they deemed criminal. Folk need to also keep in mind that Newt’s business with Freddie and Fannie were supposedly 1 year prior to the mortgage crisis and only 10% of Freddie & Fannie loans were to unqualified borrowers which caused this collapse. If your’re looking for someone to blame, how about Barney Frank & Maxine Waters who are both elected government representatives. Newt was not an elected official at the times of his Freddie & Fannied business transactions.
There you go again. I have already agreed with you that the Grinch has every right to make money.
However, since he was paid with Tax Payer dollars, I want to know
exactly what his consulting was about. I want to know how much he billed per hour. I want to know who his checks were made payable to.
I also want to know more about Ron Pauls newsletters and I want to see Romney’s emails concerning his Mass Health Insurance.
Better to get the details out now, than to have the rats drop the Freddie Mac bomb, if he becomes the nominee. Why are u so afraid to know the specific details of his consulting work?
