Nasty, Rotty Stuff' (LA School District Wasting Thousands of Healthy Food. Students Reject Them)
Wall Street Journal ^ | 12/22/2011

"Nasty, Rotty Stuff"

That's the verdict from student Mayra Gutierrez on the new healthful menu introduced this year by the Los Angeles Unified School District. And she's not alone, according to the L.A. Times.

"At Van Nuys High School," reports the paper, "complaints about the food were so widespread that Principal Judith Vanderbok wrote to [food services director Dennis] Barrett with the plea: 'Please help! Bring back better food!'"

Readers might wonder how, with all of the challenges in reading, writing and arithmetic, school administrators decided that reducing fat and sodium at the cafeteria was a top priority for L.A. schools. And it turns out that the city's decision to ban chocolate milk and chicken nuggets in favor of quinoa salads and pad Thai noodles has created a full-blown crisis.

"Many of the meals are being rejected en masse. Participation in the school lunch program has dropped by thousands of students," reports the Times. "Students are ditching lunch, and some say they're suffering from headaches, stomach pains and even anemia. At many campuses, an underground market for chips, candy, fast-food burgers and other taboo fare is thriving."

So the healthy food is so bad that kids are literally starving themselves rather than tucking into vegetarian curries, or else engaging in a black market. Apparently even an art teacher has been among those caught selling illicit candy, chips and instant noodles. Andre Jahchan, a high-school sophomore, tells the Times, "No matter how healthy it is, if it's not appetizing, people won't eat it."

No one is against healthy eating, and obesity is a growing youth problem, but L.A.'s education whizzes forgot the law of unintended health-food consequences. You can't make a child eat vegetables without a little dessert to wash it down.

Let McDonals open a store in the school and give each moocher a $5.00 voucher every day.

Are they still allowed to bring lunchboxes? I am sure those will be banned if this persists.

My God man, there could be bombs or drugs in those lunchboxes!!!

If they don’t eat it, maybe they’ll lose some weight.

Our local high school has a chik-fil-a and a subway and something else in there.... heh

Plus bringing your lunch is always an option, well maybe not in leftist enclaves like LA.

Publik skoolz should not exist, IMO

Do Like I did back in 1956. Bring your own from home. A couple of sandwiches, and a cookie or apple. Certainly better than the slop they served at ONE school I went to!

Same here. From 1955 to 1968, I always brought a brown bag lunch from home - bologna or peanut butter sandwichs and potato chips. I never ate the horrible cafeteria food, but often bought ice cream bars at school.

Supply and demand. The screwools supply crappy lunches and the students demand some thing else.

Already have been banned at our local school. Everyone must eat the government supplied slop. The more kids forced to eat, the more money the suppliers get from Uncle Sugar (you and me).

I think you are right on all three points. But I also think that they do not want to prepare nutritious food that is tasty or tasty food that is nutritious.

Take the way they are flipping out over salt, something that is a required part of your diet and, except in a few cases, not harmful at all yet it must be restricted!

Why?

Well, you are eating more then you need!

So?

You are eating more then you need!

Once again, so?

They have never been able to explain why they are against it for everybody but they are. It is tasty, it makes other foods tasty and it is necessary. Nutritious food must be revolting because they don't want people to enjoy eating.

I think that if salt was nasty they would be dumping it on everything and encouraging us to eat it.

Hey, dumb a**. Just because you like the BS they are serving doesn’t mean the kids are brats. I hated cafeteria food when I was in HS and never eat it, brought my lunch from home. The only brat I see on this thread is you.

Just like liberals, short term “fixes” that end up in long-term pain.

Rush announced the other day that the LA school District has back-tracked somewhat and is going to offer burgers and pizza everyday along with the crap that it is currently serving ...

Its a bitch slap to Michelle ...

What it really suggests is that the entire premise for offering the food — that the kids can’t afford their own — has just been blown out of the water. They can afford the junk they want, and have just proven it.

I have a fine reflection and it shows a conservative, not a liberal repeating liberal BS talking points and lying about cafeteria food, which was barely edible before the Wookie put her 2 cents into the pot.

Public school is child abuse.

You're so right. This society isn't even recognizable anymore. How the hell is it so many people go along with this EVIL?
