A Turkish non-governmental organization (NGO) is set to give free shooting courses at a gun range for women who were subjected to domestic violence.

Åžefkat-Der has suggested arming women as an effective way to combat domestic violence. "The state should grant licensed, tax-free arms to women under vital threat to defend themselves in emergency situations and train them in close combat and weapons use," said Hayrettin Bulan, the head of Åžefkat-Der.

Purchasing guns in Turkey is easy, and it would serve to deter potential killers if women also posessed firearms, he said, adding they were also going to appeal to the Parliament, ministries and political parties to enact a motion that includes their suggestion to arm women.
The organization plans to appeal to Parliament, ministries and political parties to enact a motion that includes their suggestion to arm women, Bulan said.

"Shouldn't women be able to protect themselves when there are no police or guards standing next to them? What is wrong with saying that women should learn how to operate arms to save their own lives by training on a range beforehand?" Bulan asked.

Åžefkat-Der raised similar suggestions Nov. 25 on the Struggle against Violence toward Women Day and other occasions.

"You can engage in acts aimed at wounding your husband with a knife or a gun, such as hitting or cutting across his wrist, so as to make it difficult for him to abuse you again…If you believe you will not be able to deliver yourself from death by causing injury, then you can also opt to neutralize [killing or critically wounding] the potential killer before he kills you," Åžefkat-Der said.

Figures from the We Will Stop Women's Murders platform show about 160 women in Turkey were murdered by relatives such as family members, lovers or spouses, in 2011.

A total of 179 women are known to have been raped in 2011 and another 70 allegedly committed suicide, although three of them were later found to have been murdered as well.

The rate of women murdered by their husbands had increased by nearly 200 percent between 2009 and 2010, according to reports.

It might make them think twice about honor killings, IMHO.

I can't help with diacritical marks on the Turkish version of the Roman Alphabet.

I see the rate of women murdered by their husbands doubled from 2009 to 2010. I suspect that with recent currents of unrest in the Muslim world, that women are beginning to protest ill treatment more. This is very dangerous. In a therapy group I was encouraged to do something like this. The results in the short term were frightening, although ultimately things were improved, although it could also have ended very badly.

I don’t think Muslim men will be very supportive.

Whether it's 1% or 99% of Muslim men who are violent and abusive, I hope the women they consider property solve the problem in a permanent manner.

160 women killed by relatives (including spouses & lovers)?

What US STATE didn’t have more than that last year?

What a non-story (though I like the idea of armed citizenry, regardless of gender or purpose). Remember how Iraq had armed policewomen for like 3 hours, then the policemen took their guns (probably at the behest of their husbands)?

Take all statistics and statistical assertions with a couple of tons of salt. Even in cases where the statistics are meticulously gathered, there can be wildly different reporting rates. In other cases, attribution of a cause can change because of political or other pressure.

The most effective police technique for reducing crime, is to change methods and instances of reporting.

In 2010, according to the FBI uniform reporting, 2918 women were murdered, from all causes in the U.S., an average of about 58 per state. Turkey has about one fourth the population of the U.S., so the equivalent rate for Turkey would be about 740 women killed from all causes. Since, judging by evening news reports, the overwhelming number of women murdered are murdered by husbands and boyfriends, say, an equivalent rate for Turkey would be about 500.

PS: What’s the most dangerous place for a black baby in the United States? The womb.

What’s the next most dangerous place for a black baby in the US? Home alone with the mother’s current boyfirend (when he is NOT the baby-daddy).

Frightening, and spreading to “white America”.

Violence toward women cannot be tolerated, though in the moslem culture (wherever moslems be) it is tolerated. Speaks volumes on the moslem culture. Whenever a man is violent towards a woman it should not be tolerated wherever it takes place and whenever it takes place. Have always thought that if women were armed in moslem countries the likelihood would be shortly the violence against women would subside. Wish more law-abiding women in this nation were armed as well. Would help to ensure that lady’s safety, once properly trained. Read recently that many women in Libya are being raped now that the fighting has subsided. Trading one form of violence for another does not speak well of those who now control Libya, though one article I read practical justified the rapes. All I could do was shake my head in disbelief. Though the article was written out of Libya, and do not have the source of the article to post, stomach turning does not begin to describe my thoughts. Would have to believe the same is taking place in Egypt, and the other so-called liberated areas. Not good to build a society on rape as being an acceptable practice or any other form of violence toward women. If the women were armed then maybe they would stand a chance in these backward thinking newly liberated countries. As it stands now (imho) two steps forward and three steps back will not work out well for the women of the (newly liberated?) countries.

Good point, but a baby daddy that isn’t married to mommy is not usually a very good babysitter, either.

I remember sitting in a Wendy’s in Acton, MA, with my wife, while a bunch of white trash women in the booth behind us discussed their latest pregnancies, their doctors and what-not. Having little bastards was an adventure and visits with their doctors was the only chance these broodmares for the welfare state ever got to interact with educated and non-threatening men.

The one topic that never seemed to come up was “daddy”. I don’t think one of them ever once raised to topic of men, either boyfriends or husbands. They simply did not seem to have men as an integral part of their lives, merely as visiting sperm donors.

An increasing number of whites in my area were doing the same thing, breeding for bucks; it slowed considerably with the 1996 Welfare Reform, but mostly so they only have one instead of multiple bastards (I guess the one is all they need as an excuse for a lot of things - not working, rent subsidies, WIC, food stamps, etc.).

Any guy that meets one of these creatures better be REALLY careful.

I think for a lot of young women without job skills or the prospect of a stable marriage to a man who can provide, it’s a way of getting out of their parents house.

Very good list, with one slight correction:

If you need to use deadly force, the first sound they hear should be ... the safety clicking off nothing at all.

You’re absolutely right; this is what will pass for a “family” now.
