Nation's largest welfare state makes deep cuts
ap ^ | Dec 29, 2011 | Sheila v Kumar

California ...has one-eighth of the nation's population but one-third of all welfare recipients.

...

The main reason California has such a high percentage of the nation's welfare cases is because it is one of the few states that continue to provide welfare checks for children once their parents are no longer eligible.

California is a great place to be poor.

EBT pays $200 per recipient and day care fees. 3 mamas will get together, “day care” each others’ kids, and split the funds.

Everytime the voters have tried to deny illegal immigrants benefits (prop 187), the court steps in and calls it illegal.

I lived in California in the 90’s and there could not be a more beautiful place, but it’s going the way of Detroit.

Yep. I'm still waiting for my $232 state tax refund.

California is tapped out.

No mention of the impact of illegal immigration and anchor babies on the job picture. It is impossible to solve the welfare and state budget problem without addressing illegal immigration. But that ill never happen because of the lock the Rats have on the state. The welfare system, the prison system and the education system all are dependent of having more victims to support the public unions who support the Rats with checked off union dues. They prosper when the welfare rolls, school enrollment and prison population grows.

Not to mention the millions of dollars in remittances that funnels from California to Mexico.

Cal-Learn gave her a cash grant of $530 a month plus an additional $133 for transportation. Now she gets $490 a month from the state's welfare program, a reduction of $173 a month, and she has rent to pay on a Sacramento apartment. "I know that I can do it, but it's hard, and especially when you're doing it all on your own," she said. "The program you did have is getting cut now, so it's only going to be harder."

Doing what "all on your own"? You are doing nothing for the money. Get off your butt and do some work.

Hey, better to collect food stamps at the beach than go to work in the snow. The American dream, California style.

Funny, when Governor Shriver mailed me a Bad Refund Check a few years ago, I immediately became self-employed and moved to Arizona. Everybody in this state should claim EXEMPT on their witholding form, then watch them squirm. There is no other way to bust the welfare state other than taking away ALL THEIR FUNDS PERMANENTLY.

Anybody who thinks the CA assembly would pass, and Jerry Brown would sign, any attempt the make “deep cuts” in welfare spending is on even better drugs than Brown.

Can you say "Illegal Aliens?"

That is THE answer to many if not most of CA's problems (add in monumental socialist/Marxist in gov't)for decades!

Illegals have streamed into CA since Reagan agreed to amnesty of 3M only on the basis of Simpson/Masoli law being enforced (which was NEVER enforced!)

Thank You establishment RINOs/dimocRATS in DC and every other state, shielding illegal aliens to qualify for more tax $$$$ for Welfare, "At Risk" School Districts, "Infrastructure," etc. ad nausea.

Even with this disgusting waste, it's still a small portion of the budget.

Around 7%.

Cutting all Welfare will not sovle the budget problems in Sacramento.

You have to go after the Unions and State Employees.

Funny how it works here: All those cuts to the welfare budget and not a single worker laid off.

And right now, that where two legs of the fight reside.

Taxpayers - Welfare recipients/Advocates - State Workers.

The workers and the welfare crowd will be going after the taxpayer this fall. If they fail, California will go bankrupt.

Democrats are genetically unable to cut any more. They would rather see complete default on all bonds...and send the checks out anyway, daring the banks not to cash them.

Once the checks won't cash, the cities will burn to the ground.

Deep cuts What exactly does that mean? It most certainly doesn't mean a large reduction in the amount spent over the average of the past several years. This is journalistic fraud. Pure advocacy for the European Socialist welfare state. There are no deep cuts. Compared to historical averages, there aren't even any cuts.

Well......well.....well? It’s for the children you know. If you don’t like it you all are selfish animals and hope all these children will die. /end sarc.

There, spoken like a true progressive liberal. In California this is normal “speak.” That’s why everyone is leaving the state and it becomes a larger financial and ideological cesspool with each passing day.

However, it’s OK for it’s for the children.

“California’s unemployment rate has been dropping in recent months but is still second highest in the nation behind Nevada, at 11.3 percent, and remains far higher than the national rate of 8.6 percent.”

And let us not forget that the 8.6% number is thoroughly cooked and absolute BS. Due to the way the BLS lies about the number, it’s hard to estimate what it should really be. I’d guesstimate around 9.7% or so.

estimates that $3.5 billion has been cut from California's welfare-to-work program since 2008.

Welfare spending as a percentage of the state's overall budget has dropped by more than half since 1996

I love watching so-called conservatives wringing their hands, and crying about this.
