More retiring from Congress on the horizon

The holidays are drawing to a close, and for the political world a new season is dawning: retirement season.
The new year marks the unofficial starting gun of the campaign season and traditionally produces a flurry of announcements from members of Congress that they will not seek reelection in the fall — and officials from both parties predict this year will be no different.
It’s already begun. Two days after Christmas, Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) announced that he will forgo a third term rather than embark on a bruising reelection campaign — a decision that likely hands the seat to Republicans. Then, on Friday, Ohio Rep. Steve Austria also bowed out, citing a redistricting plan that pits him against a fellow Republican congressman.
Democratic officials say they are closely monitoring several other party members, including 73-year-old New York Rep. Maurice Hinchey and North Carolina Rep. Brad Miller, who faces a narrow road to a sixth term after Republicans drew him into the same seat as another Democratic incumbent in this year’s redistricting. Rep. Heath Shuler, another North Carolina Democrat in a challenging district, raised questions about whether he would retire after he told a local newspaper that being in Congress “gets old. You have to keep fighting and keep fighting, and sometimes, people just don’t listen.”

So they’re “retiring.”

They never actually leave. They’ll just join the other 370 former members of congress who are currently lobbyists or advisors.

Republicans may fight but I think it is better to fight than to follow the dictatorial orders of the Democrat party.
I have lived in Ohio 34 years and never heard of Steve Austria. Granted, I'm not in his district, but I recognize the names of most all the House members. At least he is leaving the district in republican hands, so no loss if he disappears without a trace.
As for the mentally defective and toxic psychotic Hinchey, NYawkers need to hang their heads in shame every day this sucker lives on the dole. America really does not need him in DC--or anywhere on the planet. Let us hope he assumes room temperature shortly.

No way Obama wins another term. Don’t ever concede on that point.

Well it looks like its going to be either Romney or Obama so yeah if such happens Obama wins another term, whether it is gonna be the Democrat one or the Republican one we must wait till Nov. 2012 to find out.
They hosed up the country since January 1, 2007 and don’t want to face the voters. Cowards all!

The gripe against Turner was that he was not "warm and fuzzy," never hung out with the constituents, but I'd say 95% of the time voted right, including on the debt ceiling, which Austria did not. Austria, on the other hand, was more "warm and fuzzy." Still, I'll take the votes and you can keep the hugs.
But it shows you that Turner was concerned. Not only did I get a Christmas card from him but I got invited to his house for the first time. :)

I am in Austria’s district. He was the hand-picked successor to Dave Hobson. I think Austria’s wife worked for congressman Hobson.
I have never been impressed with Steve Austria. He’s only visible around election time. His district is being combined with Mike Turners district.
Turner won the district several elections before Austria took over for congressman Hobson. The congressman before Turner was Tony Hall (D), who Bush lured into some sort of world hunger job.
Tony Hall didn’t even live in his district (Dayton), much less do anything for his constituents. It was considered a safe seat when Tony Hall had it, but when it went up-for-grabs, Turner won it and has held it ever since.
Turner is behind the investigation into the shenanigans surrounding the GM bankruptcy where the underfunded GM union pension was made whole, and the fully funded Delphi pension got dumped on the PBGC and the non-union employees got pennies on the dollar. I have a number of friends who got screwed on that one. Turner may become a target of the Obama administration, because of this.

Two suggestions:
Spend more time on the treadmill and join the fight. Better to die fighting than live on your knees.

We can’t let Bahama take another term, but my intuition says that he gets smoked worse than Carter.
