US election 2012: Mitt Romney On Course For Historic Double Victory Mitt Romney could strike a decisive early blow in the contest to pick the Republican party’s presidential nominee by becoming the first candidate ever to win both the first two states to vote, opinion polls suggest.

By Jon Swaine 01 Jan 2012 The former Massachusetts governor leads the party field both in Iowa, where tomorrow’s caucuses will give the candidates their first test, and in New Hampshire, where voters go to the polls next Tuesday.

If successful, Mr Romney would become the first Republican challenger in the modern primary system’s 35-year history to win both states. Party strategists concede that such a scenario would effectively end the contest after just one week of voting.

The double-victory would be particularly significant because of the states’ contrasting electorates. While Mr Romney, who made $250 million (£160 million) as a private equity executive, impresses New Hampshire’s fiscal conservatives, he is loathed by some Iowan social conservatives for his moderate stances on abortion and gay rights.

However, while his more Right-wing rivals have risen and fallen in the polls, the 64-year-old has steadily persuaded voters in both states that he has the best chance of beating President Barack Obama, who, he claims, “doesn’t understand America”.

"The president takes his inspiration from the social democrats of Europe, who would try to change us into a European-style welfare state," he told a rally at a packed restaurant in Atlantic last night.

The “air of inevitability” that is being created around Mitt Romney omits one glaring faact: that his numbers have not budged significantly, despite wide name recognition and frequent appearances showing his “common side”.

Mitt is, and always was, a member of the elite, who happens to have extraordinarily good fortune in selecting his background and parentage, and who has compounded on that good fortune by attendant passing good judgment in wealth formation and accumulation. As such, he does not have the recognition for the hardscrabble life of Rick Perry or even Rick Santorum, also of somewhat humble origins, son of an immigrant who worked his way up, and who lived under modest circumstances for many years.

But Mitt as “common man”? Not a fit.

Anyone conceding that is a complete fool. The Party will still be backing their establishment candidate - Newt Gingrich - while a sizable plurality of voters vote for the four conservative candidates in the race - Santorum, Bachmann, Perry, and Huntsman.

Simply because a news source states a favorable Romney news headline is no reason to close our eyes and accept it. Rather, the proper course is to face the media, its lies and all, and including sometimes what many see as a reasonably accurate portrayal of events even if they don’t seem to break our way. I realize that having actual conservatives in the race is hampering Newt’s chances. You’re absolutely right. We need to look into instant-runoff voting and ranked choice voting for our primaries. Otherwise a candidate can claim to “win” with a small plurality of the vote. Ron Paul could do it just as well as Mitt Romney could do it. This would be the biggest political scam I’ve ever seen if Mitt Romney is somehow anointed the nominee based on getting 20-something percent while the conservatives split the vote.
