(CNN) - Ron Paul dinged rival Rick Santorum Monday for being a "very liberal" candidate, saying the former Pennsylvania senator and staunch social conservative voted for too much spending during his time in Congress.
Speaking to CNN Senior Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash before a campaign event with his son, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, the White House hopeful said his rival had taken positions counter to true conservative ideas.
I mean, have you looked at his record? Go look at his record," Paul said.
He continued: "He spends too much money. He wasn't leading the charge to slash the budgets and vote against big government."
Rand Paul added that Santorum's vote history proved he wasn't a true conservative.
"He voted to double the size of the Department of Education," Rand Paul said. "He voted to expand Medicare and add free drugs for senior citizens and he has voted for foreign aid. Those are not conservative principles. Seventy-seven percent of the American people are opposed to foreign aid and Rick Santorum has voted for it every time it's come down."
Paul also spoke in some of the strongest terms to date about the potential of a third-party bid should he fail to secure the GOP nomination.
"I have no plans in doing that," Paul said. "Tomorrow is a big day. We'll see what happens but I have no intention of doing that, no plans and no desire."

He’s my second choice and will be my first choice by the time the race gets to Michigan.
Yeah, Arlen Spector wasn’t liberal either who’s biggest cheerleader was Ricky.
If Paul says you are not conservative then that means you must be pretty good by conservative standards since Paul is a leftist Jew hating mullah loving whack job...
I kinda like Santorum and couldn’t understand why he wasn’t getting more attention. He would be better than the other choices. Not flashy enough for the media though.
To this day, I still don’t understand that move.
Is any of this incorrect?
I thought he jumped to the Libertine Party.
u first, be sure to wear protection
Many of us don’t.
Everyone: Ron Paul is crazy
How people can post such disgusting slander on this site is amazing. Don’t you anything better to do with your time? Like clean the garage?

LOL kinda funny from the clown who happily declares that the surge is all a media creation on this thread.

The word was that he used the endorsement to extract a promise of support for Roberts and Alito (Specter was a key member of the Senate Judiciary Committee who could have taken other votes with him).
Also, for better or worse, Santorum seemed to back George W. Bush mostly when called upon. This was one of those times.
The real headscratcher for me was Brownback endorsing Sebelius for HHS. Icky-poo!
Such a statement demonstrates even more lunacy on the part of Ron Paul.
I read Paul sites on occasion, hate sites on occasion, ejonesie22 is probably a crazy neocon war monger, a meat puppet. Learned that term from a Paulistinian today on FR.
When you clean your garbage afronaut, watch out for the meatpuppets, they bite.
wasn’t Specter the deciding vote in the senate for the worst piece of legislation in modern American history?
Yeah I don’t get too excited one way or the other about endorsements.
Santorum thinks he is some kind of a dictator who can bomb countries without a formal declaration of war just because he is President. Liberal? Maybe but he sure isn’t conservative. He must think Congress is some kind of a potted plant. If he wants to bomb Iran, the first thing he should do is go before Congress and ask for a formal declaration of war.
Mr Santorum may be the only choice left that I could vote for that wouldn’t make me feel like I needed a shower afterwards.
Like eveyone has said about their choice..noone is perfect so neither is Santorum.
Has anyone been able to confirm the report that Paul converted to Islam?
Hah! On the BBC news radio breaks last night in the wee hours, Ben Smith was on yapping about Iowa and how Santorum would never win an election because he’s too conservative for the American people.
Santorum lost his home state by 18 points last time around. There is a heavy stink associated with any incumbent who loses in that kind of landslide defeat. I actually agree with Santorum on most issues and he is a solid conservative in my book, but he will never attract the kind of money needed to truly make him competitive. Few people are going to risk big money on a guy who lost his last re-election bid in such spectacular fashion. And yeah, I think you have a good point - Santorum is very plain and not flashy (I'd call it charismatic) enough for the media.
To put it mildly, and more respectfully than he deserves!
Now we're beginning to see something which I had feared, and which makes me pretty sad. Mullah Paul is going to taint his son with his stench. I like Rand Paul, but have been keeping an eye on him to see how far the fruit falls from the tree.
Thanks for the info.
Paul is a fraud when it comes to spending.
He loads bills up with tons of spending when he knows they will pass, votes against them as says “see I am for cutting spending”.
Why wont he go away.
I don't have any desire to temper what I say about Paul or his idiot followers.
Just sayin’...
LOL...
Bozo wants to know how your like your crow served? I am buying you lunch on Wednesday. We shall see how those 300 people surveys with an 8.5% margin of error pan out for Rick
As I recall, it was a "scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" scenario. Specter was on the Judiciary Committee at the time that Alito and Roberts were nominated. Bush called in a favor to Santorum, and asked him to support Snarlin' Arlen, who would then see to it that Alito and Roberts were approved by the Senate. Santorum was a good Republican and did his Party Leadership's bidding. This act angered Santorum's conservative base and he was thrown under the Republican bus.
If you ask me, I think Santorum was put into a politically self-defeating situation by the Republican Party, but that's just MHO...
>>>Yeah, Arlen Spector wasnt liberal either whos biggest cheerleader was Ricky.
It was out of political pragmatism. Having Spector in the Senate, and on the Judiciary committee gave us Alito & Roberts on the SCOTUS.
It is probably being exaggerated, but I’m going to research it to be sure. You can spin anything to sound awful.
While I don’t agree with it if he did indeed vote this way, none of the candidates can say that they have a perfect voting record when it comes to conservative issues. None of them!
BINGO!!
No kidding!
I have some questions about Paul no one has answered. He has been very anti-Christian the last 10 years. He always takes the Muslim side and is always against Christians. In every case Muslims killed Christians, he thinks it was justified, but in any case Christians killed Muslims, they were never justified. When a Muslim shot people at a military base in Paul’s home state, Paul refused to condemn the person. I couldn’t find any record of support for Christians Paul has made in the last 10 years. If Paul were president, he would have to represent Christians, not just Muslims. He seems to be really anti-Christian.
Now I see why he wants to legalize dope.

“It was out of political pragmatism. Having Spector in the Senate, and on the Judiciary committee gave us Alito & Roberts on the SCOTUS.”
Another bingo!
I totally agree.
LOL. Thune would have been the better choice if Ricky had balls. He didn’t and the voters let him know it in his re-election. Rick would have still been in the Senate. Arlen showed his true colors when he made a switch. Wonder if Arlen will support Rick. Not likely.
“Paul is a fraud when it comes to spending.

Word.
I think the media may be behind the latest attention given to Santorum. The “surge” may be timed in order to dilute the opposition to Romney in Iowa. I just did a quick scan of this thread and I notice that everyone is fighting between Gingrich, Paul, and Santorum. Nobody is throwing rocks at Romney or even comparing Santorum to Romney.
I guess we are properly distracted and diluted. :(
Compared to Ron Paul whose newsletters show him to be farther right than John Birch, Barry Goldwater, and Ronald Reagan, everyone including Rick Santorum looks like a liberal.
Would he then be Ron Saul?
Thanks, you answered the question I was itching to ask.
