Reunited after 77 years: Woman meets the daughter she gave up for adoption
Daily Mail, UK ^ | 02 Jan 2012

For almost a century, Minka Disbrow tried to find out what became of the baby girl she gave up for adoption after being raped as a teenager. She hoped, but never imagined, that she would see her daughter Betty Jane again. Her only connection to the child was a black and white photograph of the baby bundled up in blankets shortly after she was born.

Then in 2006, Mrs Disbrow, who turned 100 years old at the end of last month, received a call from Brian Lee who turned out to be her grandson. He then asked if she'd like to speak with Betty Jane - whose name was now Ruth Lee.

She looks amazing for 100 years old in that pic. So glad she lived to see her daughter, and her daughter had the opportunity to meet her bio-mom.

Such lovely women. Luckily for Ruth Lee and her accomplished children and grandchildren, our language did not include the phrase “except in the case of rape” at the time of her birth.

Comment from the site:

“The woman gave the child the gift of life and loved her anyway, despite the circumstances of her conception. What a wonderful story. The world is richer because she gave that baby the right to live.”

Amen!

“Such lovely women.”

I agree.

“Luckily for Ruth Lee and her accomplished children and grandchildren, our language did not include the phrase ‘except in the case of rape’ at the time of her birth.”

I understand the point you’re trying to make, but, if I read correctly, there is nothing to indicate that she wanted to give her up to adoption, either. The article said that she was not allowed to have the baby at the farm. So, while I understand the desire to use this as an example of giving for an adoption, rather than abortion, I really don’t think that she wanted to do either. I am glad that her prayers were answered and she was able to see the baby she had to give away again. God hears all prayers, and is Good. And was good to this loving mother, in granting her her lifelong wish: to see her baby girl again.

(I, like you, in no way support, accept or condone abortion, either, I just don’t think that the dilemma you allude to is applicable to this heartwarming story. JMHO.)

My two “adopted at birth” children (now both grown)
have never expressed any interest in knowing who their birth parents were.

Some never do have any interest. Some do and never do anything or tell their parents for fear of hurting them. Some have no interest but use it to hurt their parents. Everybody is different.

Can you imagine, at the age of 82, meeting your mother? Incredible story.

The blessings of adoption (pro life decisions) which were standard practice at the time. This man would never have been born had his grandmother been lured into an organization like planned parenthood.

Sometimes it’s the grandchildren who get the search going, as in this story.

The point I was attempting to make is that “today” rape is considered a valid reason to deny an innocent child and his or her future offspring of life—even by some of those who would otherwise disapprove of abortion.

Ruth and Chet live in our rural area. Very nice folks and just plain good people. Ruth worked at the local Walmart until she was 75, IIRC.

The entire county claims Mark Lee and we are all very proud of him.

It was strange to see this on FR, go to the Daily Mail and then find the story on our local paper’s website.
