Defeating Obama: Will it take a Brokered GOP Convention? Probably! (Vanity)
January 5, 2012 | no dems

I'm thinking the only way we will be able to beat Obama will be to have a brokered GOP Convention and a "dark horse" candidate rise out of the ashes. Do I think it will happen? Heck no. So, we are, as my granny used to say: "In a mell of a hess". The GOP Candidates currently running, and the drop-out, Michele Bachmann, have beaten, bruised and bloodied each other so badly that we’re going to make doggone sure we send a nominee into the General Election damaged beyond repair; making victory easy for Obama. The Dems are loving our Primary Process. It should be called the Obituary Process since we're killing off all of our candidates one by one. Now RinoRom and Paully-Wally are aiming their guns on Rick Santorum. Friendly fire is just as deadly as enemy fire.

We are determined to pull defeat from the jaws of victory. And when that happens, we will have no one to blame but ourselves.

This is very unlikely with most delegates pledged to a candidate these days.

Most people define brokered election as one where the candidate is not nominated on the first ballot. The last time that happened was 1948 for the Republicans and 1952 for the Democrats.

But I think you mean brokered in an older sense where the party looks past the candidates and nominates a "dark horse." The last time that happened for the Republicans was when the party bosses invited Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes to the be the candidate to heal the rift between the Taft and Roosevelt wings of the Republican Party.

I would say the last brokered convention for the Democrats was 1924. Although John Davis was technically a candidate significant support did not begin to swing his way until he emerged as a compromise candidate around the 100th ballot.

Regardless of how you define brokered convention, the last brokered candidates in both parties all lost.

pribeus, boehner, mcconnell, cantor and the others in leadership positions of the republicon party are the ones to blame... they have had 4 years to fix the primary system... they had 4 years to come up with decent candidates and a message... and they had every opportunity to stop the attacks on Conservatives... but they were behind those attacks. You have no one to blame but those people and yourself... because you still believe that you have a party... they hate you and me more than they hate the progressives... because they are aligned with the progressives... they have been lying to us while cutting back room deals with satan.

The repungnicons do not even have a WAR ROOM setup... and they have been at war with progressive demonrats for six years. In a word... Worthless.

I go tthe feeling the other night that Romney’s boys knew a thing or two about “finding” ballots when their candidate needed a dozen or so to slip by Santorum.

A very smelly display. It seemed like something out of King County, WA.

I believe you are correct and some potential candidates have been on this strategey all along. That said....

Loose lips sink ships.

The 2012 GOP primaries are a marathon, not a sprint. I urge fellow FReepers to keep this in mind rather than panic over what just happened in Iowa. Read the information from the 'alternative media' because the Lame Stream Media is trying hard to pick the GOP candidate for us. Read between the lines when the talking heads on the networks spew their garbage and you will see the truth.

We don't have another Reagan in this group of candidates (I wish there were) and it doesn't look like one in the wings either. So check everything on the all the candidates and chose wisely, or else the media will pick our candidate and the country will be lost forever.

I will chose whomevery I think is the best conservative candidate in our state primary, please do likewise.

Palin brought a lot of waverers back into McCain's camp last time (and drove out others).

A good VP pick -- people are talking about Marco Rubio right now -- could attract people who are on the fence.

Of course the candidate at the top of the ticket would have to be smart enough know this (and be confident enough not to be threatened by the popularity of the VP pick).

Well Joe... I see it like this... we have a dim party comprised of communists and a republican party comprised of socialists.

I hate to say it, but it will probably be Romney/Rubio. I’m happy with half of that ticket.

No. Alan Keyes was no Herman Cain; except Keyes didn’t hit on white women and give money to an old broads behind his wife’s back
