Southwestern Energy doesn't know how many Brown Dense wells will "tell the story"

Magnolia-area residents took a close look at Southwestern Energy's Fayetteville Shale operations in Faulkner County on Wednesday.

The interest in SWN stems from the company's involvement with oil exploration in the Lower Smackover Brown Dense, a rock formation under South Arkansas and North Louisiana. Southwestern Energy has just begun drilling the second of a dozen test wells into the Brown Dense to learn if marketable amounts of oil can be produced.

Southwestern Energy is the largest driller of natural gas wells in the Fayetteville Shale of North Central Arkansas. It plans to use the same rock fracturing and horizontal drilling technology used to find gas in the Fayetteville Shale in the 9,000-11,000 foot Brown Dense.

If the company is successful, Columbia County could experience a rapid "ramp-up" in oil drilling, similar to the oil boom now under way in North Dakota's Bakken Shale. Thousands of jobs and billions of dollars worth of new oil and gas production, involving an untold number of major oil producers and vendors, are potentially involved.

There was no answer to the key question on the minds of thousands of people in South Arkansas and North Louisiana: What happened at the Roberson well?

The Roberson site, located east of Arkansas 98 just north of the Atlanta community in Columbia County, was Southwestern's first drilling site. The drilling rig is down now and has moved to a new location in Claiborne Parish. People want to know if the Roberson well found oil and gas.

"I can't talk anything about it because I really don't know anything about it. In-house, we're not talking about it because it's an exploration project," said Sheffer, a petroleum engineer. "I don't know if one well tells the story or if 10 wells tells the story. It's a big area."

In the Fayetteville Shale, many people were in disbelief when drillers actually showed up to prospect on leased property.

This line made me laugh out loud and imagine all kinds of entertaining scenarios...Anyway, Brown Dense formation: any thoughts on its prospects, especially Columbia Cty, Ar? Lots of activity, buzz, rumors, big paydays for a couple of property owners at test wells...more waiting for developments.

The untapped resources and in this case abandoned sites are being revealed all over the fruited plain. Just don't Obama learn of it or he'll issue decrees to halt it or unleash his rogue agencies.

I'm looking out the window above my desk - directly at SWN's headquarters. They do not receive enough credit for what they have accomplished for AR resource development, so I was happy to see this post.

Not only are they great stewards of our resources, they are great neighbors here in the Village. Frac on SWN!

Great to hear the positive words about Soutwestern Energy, and I’m thankful for them, too! I do wish they weren’t so tight-lipped about their activity, yet I well understand their position. I have property adjacent to the referenced test well site—my cousin’s land—so, needless to say I’m hungry for news. The positive economic impact for the entire region could amaze its goodly people and confound the loony Left.

Right, wind power is so dead. Big countries,like the U.S. and Canada, run on fossil fuels not on environmentalists’ hot air. I live in the DFW area and for the last five yrs or so I’ve seen numerous trucks several times a week transporting windmill parts out I-20 heading Westward. They seemingly vanished around mid-summer last yr. Fail.

Wind, solar....etc. should only and always be a supplemental unsubsidized alternative...not foundational to energy.

That's quite reasonable. I'm not opposed to alternatives-- far from it, but responsible mainline entities can provide the bulk of our energy needs with minimal impact to our surroundings. Private investments in efficient energy alternatives is the best path forward, which will yield, not coincidentally, the most innovation as well as potential for future strong job growth...it's just not going to materialize overnight because some bureaucrat snaps his fingers (or diverts tax revenues to a favored company with an unworkable business plan). I think that reality is slowly dawning on some of these true believers. But it's tough: pragmatism isn't their strong suit!
