Romney Gave Three Contributions To Democrats
TPM ^ | 1/25/2007 | Eric Kleefeld

Posted on 01/12/2012 2:21:41 PM PST by vbmoneyspender

Romney's contributions to Dems came at a time when he was a registered Independent, and even voted for Paul Tsongas in the 1992 primaries. Indeed, his contributions at the time suggest that he was drifting away from the GOP. In addition to his giving to the Dems, his donations to Republicans had all but ceased. Romney had routinely made donations of $1,000 or more to the Massachusetts Republican State Committee throughout the 1980's, but did not make any donations to them in 1990, 1991 or 1992.

Only two years later, however, Romney veered back to the GOP, unsuccessfully running for the Senate in 1994 against Ted Kennedy as a Republican.

Not really relevant, imo.

Business gives to whomever is in power, and some to whomever is not in power. It’s not a philisophical thing, it’s business.

Given that Mitt Romney personally gave these donations - I agree. With Mitt, there is nothing philosophical about his political activities - it's just business.

Perry was in charge of Gore’s campaign in Texas in 1988. He was a Democrat as was Reagan at one time.

Romney didn’t start out as a Democrat. He started out as a Republican. Spin that one for me.

This guy is a big government liberal! Were he to win he’d take us down the same road Obama is traveling...only he’d walk instead of run.

Was it Romney’s idea to run as a Republican or the DNC’s idea?

Reagan was a Democrat in a different time in American history, generations ago. Reagan was campaigning for Republicans in every Presidential election after 1948, and formally switched party registration in 1962.

Romney left the Republican party because Reagan was elected President, spin that one.

In the last two years, we learned that Romney not only was donating to Democrats, but he did at least one fundraiser.

I hope we all know that Mitt was fund raising for Planned Parenthood AFTER he reregistered Republican.

Romney is an unprincipled opportunist. If it had not been to his advantage he would never have joined the GOP.

He could switch affiliation tomorrow and never blink.

his contributions at the time suggest that he was drifting away from the GOP.

This is a totally unfair, not to mention impossible, charge. How could Romney drift away from the GOP when he has never been remotely close to conservatism? The best he has ever done was to occasionally read a few insincere words in a speech - before going back to push for an expanded government role in every aspect of our lives.

In 1992 Tsongas was the most centrist Democrat in the field. Even conservatives like Robert Novak were supporting Tsongas over a very liberal field that included Bill Clinton and Tom Harkin. Tsongas was much like Joe Lieberman ideologically.
