Romney opens 21-point lead in South Carolina: Reuters/Ipsos(sample 995 SC reg. voters 398R 380D)

(Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has opened a wide lead over his rivals in the South Carolina primary election race, trouncing Newt Gingrich and gaining momentum in his march toward the party's nomination, a Reuters/Ipsos poll shows.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, could all but quash his rivals' presidential aspirations with a victory in South Carolina on January 21 after winning the first state-by-state nominating contests in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Voters in South Carolina - who have favored Republicans in nine of the last 10 presidential elections - appear to have shrugged off attacks on Romney by rivals who accuse him of killing jobs as a private equity executive for Bain Capital in the 1990s.

The poll showed 37 percent of South Carolina Republican voters back Romney. Congressman Ron Paul and former Senator Rick Santorum tied for second place with 16 percent support.

Gingrich, a former speaker of the House of Representatives, has fallen far back after holding a strong lead in South Carolina in December. He was in fourth place at 12 percent in the Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Santorum’s support is conservative. Almost all of it. No indies, no moderates.

Santorum's support is SOCIAL conservative. Almost all of it - which is why he'll never break out of the lower double digits.

Fiscal conservatives and patriots are horrified by the man's voting record in Congress. He's also about as charismatic as Dilbert, the cartoon character.

I don’t believe that for a second.

You and I have nothing to discuss.

It was Rush Limbaugh’s unabashed campaigning for Mitt that did it.

And congressmen don’t become president.

I think you mean House members don't become president.

I'd normally give you a point for that (seeing how I've made the same observation in the past), but when's the last time a former Speaker of the House ran for president?

That's a position that's much closer to the top of the food chain than mere member of the House, and in Newt's case, he was such a strong Speaker, that he elevated the power of the House to that of the Executive branch.

Say what you will about that man, but that's his legacy. I'd say that it's weighty enough to break the mold on that one tradition.

So, as Rush suggest, why not nominate the most convervative candidate possible?

Rush has his head in the sand. The most conservative Constitutional candidate is Newt Gingrich. And Newt has proved it before. Used to really listen to Rush, but this time he is in left field.

It is not impossible or even unlikely given that there is no contest on the Democrat side this time around. Lots of Democrats reregister as Republicans and the Democrats choose both Candidates for November. They did it last time. The Democrats understood way before Republicans, even Rush, that the kenyan would be the candidate and they swarmed into the Republican primaries to give us McCain as some sort of sacrificial lamb. I am a registered Democrat, always have been, and the Obama buzz was quite palpable early in the season. I participate and hear what is coming down. The Denocrats ally with the RNC and the Northeasr Republican Establishment to pick a candidate who doesn’t necessarily want to be President but does want the honor of being Chosen.

This is a lively thread, to say the least!

My friends across the country think anyone would be better than Obama.

I say we need a true deconstructionist, or we are only kicking the can down the road.

At this juncture in time, Newt Gingrich has the potential, and the gravitas.

Does he have the God-given drive to push forward, torpedos be damned? It would require a strength he has not yet demonstrated.

Sometimes, in their last breath of faith people seize an annointing and do God’s will.

Samson comes to mind...

?

“The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted online from January 10-13 with a sample of 995 South Carolina registered voters. It included 398 Republicans and 380 Democrats.”

The above tells me it is a meaningless poll.

Rush and Savage are saying Romney is the only R who can win . I think Hannity is leaning towards Newt , but would support anybody over Obama . Levin likes Santorum .
