Rick Santorum confronts Arlen’s specter
Politico ^ | January 15, 2012 | Alex Isenstatdt

Rick Santorum can point to a conservative legislative record and sterling credentials on social and cultural issues. The left hates his guts.

Even so, he’s got a long way to go before he can consolidate conservative support ahead of the Jan. 21 South Carolina primary.

One reason why: Arlen Specter.

Nearly eight years after Santorum endorsed his Pennsylvania Republican Senate partner against a conservative primary challenger, that single act continues to haunt him, an almost unforgivable heresy that lingers uncomfortably in the minds of many conservatives.

You know what they say about politics and bedfellows, and what the left would like to say about conservatives getting into a circular firing squad.

Ehhh. What the heck. I helped Tim Pawlenty get his gub’norship back in my ‘pragmatic conservatism’ days. Nowadays, I’d just lift my leg and let ‘er go on ‘R’ weenies.

Sigh...

This has been brought up and answered numerous times. Roberts and Alito. (And I won’t even mention that Toomey’s voting record has been less than stellar, or that Gingrich supported Scozzafava.)

I guess that it’s good in a way that it’s still an issue. That means that Santorum is fighting for the lead.

He isn’t perfect, but he’s a great choice. Very great. The best that we’ve had in years. Go Rick!

Join the fight!

Who cares about that endorsement. Toomey was not going to win that election cycle no matter what. He had no money and zero name recognition outside the Lehigh Valley. Spector was ahead by a mile in polls and had a pile of cash. Why people still hold a grudge over one endorsement Rick made is silly, especially since he has a well reasoned argument for backing Spector that time.

How soon we forget the "Cornhusker Kickback."

“[Santorum has] been pretty clear in retrospect that he’s had second thoughts about that situation,” said John Brabender, a Santorum campaign strategist and longtime adviser, who noted that before making the endorsement, Santorum got a personal commitment from Specter that he would back the confirmation of conservative judges and vote to oppose late-term abortion.

This suffices. Time to forgive, and let it go. The alternative is to hold onto a pretty grudge and lovely memories of America "when men were free."

There's no doubt Santorum hurt himself badly when he endorsed Spector.

Lie down with Repubic dogs . . . get up with Marxist fleas.

post the good side, if you've got it):

You could just go to the sites of all those who rated him highly like:

The American Conservative Union

National Taxpayers Union

National Rifle Association

Just about every anti-abortion group in the Country

There are, of course many others. Santorum has always been a conservative, and has always been recognized as a conservative.

Santorum would no more choose Specter for his running mate than Obama. He didn’t support him because he liked him, but was pressured to. Some support that was, but it was not repaid. You can read what happened. But one thing I did not know until Saturday was that Arlen Specter made sure that Justice Thomas, Roberts and Alito made it through the Senate and were confirmed as US Supreme Court justices because of it, that he took on the Democrats and shredded their opposition to the nominations. So, while I have NEVER liked the man, and still do not, he did us conservatives well in making sure these appointments did go through. Just think what might have been had they not? That is another reason that we must get behind whomever the candidate is and get them elected. We cannot let Obama choose the next couple.

Windflier might be reminded that incomplete stories can be tantamount to a lie, and also anger conservatives.
